The Iranian film that won three prizes at last year's Berlinale, as well as a few other awards is really a good film. Catch it if you can:

The trailer:

And the lead actress speaks German (besides being fluent in French, English and Persian, sorry the clip is a bit political.):

Now the question: which other non-French languages besides Persian and Bulgarian use 'merci' to say 'thank you'?

Merci!!

Loved, loved A Separation.

Мерси (Russian) is a very widely understood Gallicism in Russia...but probably only to the same extent that "merci" is a very widely understood Gallicism in English-speaking countries.

Thanks for the movie recommendation.

They use merci in Lebanon, too.

#7 - I'm told only women use "merci" in Egypt, although I suspect this is an exaggeration as I'm pretty sure a man said it to me the other day. Of course, he may have been impelled to unusual use of language due to the inherently amusing situation of finding himself talking to a foreigner.

I once had occasion to ask how to say "thank you" in Armenian. I was told that there is an expression in Armenian but it's usual to say "merci".
