I’m currently in the gili islands in Indonesia. I’m flying to Vietnam on May 10th and apparently I need two passport sized photos for my visa. There’s absolutely nowhere to do this on Gili Air.

The company that I got my visa from said I can get photos taken at the Ho Chi Minh airport when I arrive for a fee of $5. Is this true? I want to be certain so that I don’t get stuck at the airport or sent back for not having proper documentation.

Hi All,

Could someone with knowledge of Northern Thailand give some feedback on this itinerary. I'm wondering if it makes sense, if driving times are reasonable, and if we should goto Nam over Chang Rai, or we're missing out on any better alternative destinations?

Thanks!

*(p.s. I'm not interested in going to Pai, sorry!!!)

After 2 days in Bangkok. . .

are you going to arrange special permit on 23rd May then drive to Arughat or you are landing 23rd? Your itinerary is too short distance, do you know how long it takes, such a Bhiphedi - Bhi, Lhi - Lho. It consumes more days. It means paying more for special permit... this is why, other trekkers would not be follow this itinerary. Normally, takes 9 days special Permit (Jagat to Dharapani).

Good Luck!

Were you travelling by motorbike? Is there any public transport?

I'd been staying in Đam Mon and one of my new friends there offered to drop me at Tuy Hoa Station. (Free of charge of course - it's only 60km each way).

So back of his motorbike and stopped off a few places along the way - Ho Chi Minh Highway of the Sea memorial, Mũi Điện lighthouse, ... Missed my train of course, but there's always another one.

Not sure that the public buses go that way. Wasn't looking out for them.

Just read in "el Pais", that Renfe will sell tickets only less than a month in advance. https://elpais.com/economia/2019/05/06/actualidad/1557130904_349092.html

Haven’t been to Mal Pais or Santa Teresa so I cannot compare, but the waterfalls in Montezuma were pretty awesome! We didn’t go to the beach as there was “red tide” (February 2012)

Here are links to two articles in Spanish that I found really interesting. The El Pais article is well-written, kind of an essay about Havana. Several nice photos, too.

The 14 y Medio article covers the topic of prostitution in the prisons. I hadn't thought of this before, though after reading the article, it makes a lot of sense to me.

Enjoy!!

Hi Phil!

No you need to apply a month before as it has a validity of 30 days and days of the visa counted once you land, which means if arriving on 13th July, you can stay for 30 days + 30 days could be extended.

Hey guys,

So in February of 2019 I'll be flying out to Ho Chi Minh City and spending 12 months traveling through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia (and potentially Philippines depending on budget).

I'll spend 2-3 months in Vietnam & Thailand and 1-2 months in each of the other countries.

I am planning to buy a motorbike when I arrive in Ho Chi Minh and ride it through most of my journey (probably have to leave it behind/sell it in Malaysia due to Indonesia being mostly islands). I've done the relevant research about visas and licenses in each country.

So I have a couple of questions:

Can anyone recommend a good travel insurance company that will cover motorbike riding as well as cover for 1 year travel. I've checked a lot of insurers and it seems that motorbiking is excluded or only included if it is not the main mode of transport. I will also have camera and laptop equipment with me and I am not sure if i should get those valuables covered separately (many insurers valuables cover isn't that great) or again look for a plan with valuables included? Any advice on that would be great.

Also if anyone will be around any of these countries throughout 2019 and is looking for a travel buddy/motorcycle partner then let me know, I have bundles of time and my itinerary isn't overly fixed so i'm quite open to changes/alterations.

Finally if anyone has any specific advice or experience about this type of trip then all help is appreciated.
