If you booked with two different airlines then yes, you will have to clear customs at BKK, claim your baggage and then go through the boarding procedures for the second flight.
Did you book the flights yourself or did you use an agent? The only info on your profile is that you reside in the UK...so you don't need a visa for a short stay for Thailand.
Here is a link to the official BKK website.

And you'll see info on what to do…

If you want to party in Phuket then it must be Patong, but the beach there is crap at the best of times and in July is worse with prevailing onshore winds.

I think Samui be best for weather, nice beach, and partying. Chaweng has the nicest beach and my younger friends tell me the nightlife there is better than Lamai. Other beaches on Samui be way too quiet for serious party goers.

Hi All,

I’m off to Thailand for 10 days (3 nights Bangkok, 7 nights Koh Samui) with my 60 year old mum at the end of April. I’ve travelled in Thailand for many years (backpacking, full moon parties and all that stuff in my younger days!) and she’s lived in Indonesia for some time and is up for anything – snorkelling, driving, boat trips.

I’ve got a few ideas for Bangkok (Ghost Ghat for food, Temples, markets, a trip down Khao San Road for old times’ sake and a trip to the floating markets)…

Looking for a hotel near the port
Why? If you take the ferry from Had Rin, you will be at Bo Phut.

popular with other travellers
I doubt any hotels in the Na Thon are "popular" with tourists, but there are some on the waterfront that look OK.

Mae Nam.
Forget the hostels, outside Bkk they're not "normal". A guesthouse is more common for cheap stays.

^^ There is not much point using Agoda as hotelscombined.com includes all Agoda hotels and shows final prices including all taxes, so no surprises with at check-out.
I've yet to find a good deal on wotif.
