So US $700 for 10 days...per person?
That's 630 euros at the moment. Low,but possible. ...staying in hostel dorms or cheap hotels, eating local food, not much drinking or paid "attractions" .
Flooding along Highway 118 in northern Thailand has forced closure of the major highway between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai - http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/heavy-rain-forces-closure-of-highway-linking-chiang-mai-chiang-rai/ . This link suggests alternate routes. The Intl. Bus service between C. Mai and Luang Prabang in Laos has also been halted. This section of Hwy 118 has been under construction so maybe the road and bridge damage might be worse than a "normal" flooding.
The road from the border (better to use Tak Bai than Sungai Kolok if heading north from Kota Baru as much quicker).
all the way to Hat Yai and indeed further north is flat and not a lot of traffic. There are some lovely small roads between the main road and the coast if you have a map BUT you should take advise on the security situation as to where it is safe and where to avoid.
Take a look at Doc Let 50kms north of Nha Trang. Quy Nhon 3 hours further north has a couple of beaches worth considering Bai Xep & Nhon Hai.

Hello all,
Done a heap of research but cannot find any solid info. Can anyone recommend where to see the lantern festival (apart from Chiang Mai) like in Pai maybe?
Thanks!
It's all overland in Malaysia except for Kota Bharu-Pinang and then from Pinang to Phuket.
Doing these stretches overland is possible, but you don't have enough time in my opinion.
For instance from Pinang to Khao Sok overland should take a full day (Pinang - Hat Yai, then Hat Yai - Krabi, then from there to Khao Sok; I doubt there are any direct minibuses from Pinang to Khao Sok).
There are lots of overnight cruising options which are great if you get a decent boat. its worth spending a little more on a good boat. Cat Ba is good for a days trek, perhaps over the mountains to Viet Hai village. I think Hanoi Backpackers has an island resort if you fancy some heavy drinking.
Pai has beautiful rice fields. Had an awesome time at a kungfu camp in Pai and the place was surrounded by fantastic sceneries too. Pai is really charming.
I dont think there is any "wrong or right" itinerary, just go with what you feel most attracted to. Personally, I very very much like Chiang Mai and would include more time there. There are so many beautiful temples to see there and in the surrounding areas, several nice markets, great food, its a great place to get cheap spa treatments, and there is plenty to do and enjoy in the surrounding areas (caving, trekking, river rafting etc.). So assuming that this will be your first visit to Chiang…
