I want to visit Tenerife but my budget is limited. Do you have some advice of places that we can visit that is within our budget?

Report

Here is my wish list:
I am looking for a place with
1. a rustic beach bungalow (budget limit: aprx 50USD / night for 2 persons)
2. great off the beach snorkelling
3. no crowds
4. good weather in February March
5. no strict alcohol policy
6. No oppressive state (according to my individual limits)
7. flights from Northwestern Germany/ Amsterdam below 900€ and 25hrs
I have been decided against:
- Maldives: To expensive, oppressive regime
- Egypt: Oppressive regime
- Phillipines: Oppressive regime
- Northern Sumatra: Sharia Law
- Bunaken: unsure weather, possible crowds
- Togeans: Not the best snorkelling (discussed it here)
- Bonaire: Too crowded, possibly not the greatest snorkelling

At the moment there are two destinations on the top of my list:
1. Nicobars
2. Banda Islands / Hatta (Southern Malukkas)
It seems as if Banda Islands offer everything I am looking for (alcohol might be an issue), but flight connections are very bad (18hrs stopover) and the 6hr boat ride is also not really something I am looking forward to.
Nicobars look very promising: Direct flights from Amsterdam to Madras for aprx 600 plus low cost connection to Port Blair. But accommodation does not seem to be the Robinson style I am looking for and I am not sure if I find an accommodation that allows me to step out the front door, get my snorkelling gear on and see the coral reef I am longing for.

Has anyone been to Nicobars and Banda Islands? What would you recommend?

Back to the posters question , places that have become taken over by mainstream and upmarket tourism such as Phuket and Samui main beaches , Ko Phi Phi , Krabi may not be good places for single traveller to meet other travellers - it could be insular experience being stuck among random tourists . Try some of the remnant less built up beaches on Ko Phangan.
The town of Pai in the north west is very touristy but may suit some mass packers.

Here is PICTURE of Thong Nai Pan Noi beach at Ko Phangan in 1999 just at the end of the pre -resort bungalow era. At the left of the picture are bungalows of the former Star Hut 1 bungalows . In the middle of the beach is the restaurant of Star Hut 2 bungalows.

Bringing this up to date , I understand that Star Hut bungalows , Bios Dynamic Kitchen , Jungle Bar and Hideaway Bar as well as Mr Pong bungalows have all closed . Those who have visited this beach recently please provide updates or corrections.

He wants to stay right on the beach , I think there must be cheaper hostels and accommodation back from the beaches a bit. I think there is also a remnant bungalow place at Ao Sane cove near Nai Harn beach , but simplest bungalow costs 800 baht or more.

If budget is the main issue, agree with Luca about one country "only".
Enough to do and to see for three weeks.

But big buidings and no bungalows. Look at this PICTURE of Ko Poda , may as well be on Phuket. Poda was once very nice when undeveloped.

Hi all

I'm searching for advice... I've done a little bit of research but it's a lot to take in.
Myself and a friend would like to go away in May/June/July next year. We are looking for somewhere long haul and are hoping for somewhere with nice beaches and options for bungalow/small style accommodation not just package tours. We really want to be able to go whale watching ideally humpbacks and potentially snorkelling and other wildlife spotting, dolphins etc.
I've looked at several places but am a bit stuck.
...what would be our best option for a combination of the above .....

Sri Lanka
Zanzibar (current favourite however doesn't seem to be huge whale watching opportunities?)
Dominican Republic
South Africa (Least favourite option but seems the most wildlife friendly option?)
Bali

I have seen other locations and am open to ideas however we aren't keen on Australia and New Zealand as I have already been, or North America/Canada as we would like somewhere a little more 'exotic'. We would like to be staying near towns we can do excursions etc from however nothing overrun with tourists...access etc is important as we will only have just over a week.

Any help would be hugely appreciated...I'm feeling a little overwhelmed!!!

Thanks
Ami xxx

Thank you David that was useful, especially the photo from Tham Lod village, that is exactly the kind of hammock view I am looking for.

These guesthouses you mentioned, are they family run with food available? I will hvae own my MIFI device, so don't need WIFI, although it's a plus anywhere. What kind of price range do guesthouse follow? How much for the lowest end in during low season. I don't mind the dorm if there are only 1 or 2 other backpackers.

For example what is the 150B dorm like? And do they have dorms for less than 100B?

What about actual Krabi town? I will probably avoid developed beaches, but I do like the idea of staying in a bungalow on a beach, I'd like it to be a low-key beach. How much for one of those bungalows (right on the beach) in low season?

I didn't know about Mae Sariang! Can it be visited just after Mae Hong Song? So instead of going back to Chiang Mai, continue further south to Mae Sariang, and then Tak province and then Kanchanaburi province, all the while bypassing the busy highway between Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

PICTURE - Boracay Island when there were bamboo bungalows.

For islands or beaches in Sth East Asia perhaps post questions on the main branches if you can break it down a bit as to where you might be interested in going.
