Yesterday my wife suggested I take a solo trip this winter! I’m in Canada, and airfare is on sale until end of day, so time is of the essence.

I have visited Mexico several times before, and my favourite ruin thus far has been Tikal. I have never been to Calakmul.

I’m thinking about a 7-10 day trip towards the end amid January. Either a 7-day return from Merida Or Cancun, or a 9-10-day loop (that works with the direct flights) - landing in Cancun and departing from Merida.

Any advice on a nice trip? My wife and I have done a Cancun-bacalar trip and a Merida-Valladolid trip in the past. Does calakmul seem like a good choice? My options are pretty wide open - which is challenging given the timeline!

That's interesting. My unused visa is still active but I have postponed my trip to autumn or winter.

I'll be travelling across the USA in April/May and could do with a few tips.

As I'm travelling alone, renting a car seems prohibitively expensive when factoring in fuel and insurance. It looks like my best value option is to buy an Amtrak USA pass that gives me 30 days and 12 train journeys to make the trip.

I'm right at the beginning of planning, so I have lots of questions if anyone can help - Any other better options than the train that I haven't thought of? What's the average cost of accommodation I can expect? Any other tips?

If anyone else is making a similar trip and would like to join me for all or part of the journey, let me know and we can share costs of a car.

Cheers!

Or Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Idyllwild, San Diego, Capistrano Beach, Disneyland, Hwy 395, Red Rock Canyon, Big Pine Canyon, Bristlecone Pines campground, Benton Hotsprings, etc. Yes, San Diego has traffic congestion, but most of what tourists want to see is within a 2-mi. radius of downtown, including the hostels - beaches are 3-6 mi. from downtown. They can park the car and take the trolley around too.

PS: Getting a 1-yr. Automobile Club membership might be good insurance - flat tires, getting locked out, run out of gas, dead battery, towing, the maps, trip advisors,

Hi community,
I plan to do a one year trip to central and south america...It's not my first trip in this region, but it will probably be the longest...
I'm pretty familiar with using Maps.me and I like it. I also got my banking apps and other important apps on my smartphone.
I think about buying a 2nd smartphone just for the use of navigating inside cities or hiking etc because if I get robbed and my smartphone gets stolen it will be a real mess when I am losing the connection to my banking account for the rest of the trip...
What do you think? Is it worth buying a second smartphone (cheap one, ca. 80€)...?

kind regards
Jörn

Thanks a lot

Hi all,

I have tried and tried to find out if I can post a vape and liquid (only for personal use) to Australia...I can't have it with me on my trip in Asia beforehand so a friend was going to post it to me for my month in Australia. I will use Nicorette gum if not but would rather have it. Does anyone know if it will get through customs ok?

Thanks!
Bonnie

Amish country itself is not a tourist trap as it is where the actual Amish live. There are however, many tourist trap establishments in and around the area. Lancaster, PA is a nice town with an evolving arts scene, a good local brewery restaurant, and the surrounding countryside is nice. You don't need to go to a tourist trap to see the Amish, just drive around the area. Going to one of the numerous markets to see their handiwork and perhaps pick up a souvenir is worthwhile.

My kids love Hershey park, especially the water park part. In October it is open on the weekends and is Halloween themed. Yes, its commercial, but would be fun for the kids and I know a lot of people from across the pond like to experience Halloween themed stuff since its not as big of a deal in most of Europe.

My only comment on the itinerary is it a lot of driving to go from Gettysburg to NYC and then back to central PA. It appears you are going to NYC to visit friends, so probably unavoidable, but be prepared for a few long days of driving.

This instagram post of mine might give you an idea. I did not take a picture of my boat at Idenau out of fear (as I had trouble with the police who had detained me there the night before). The pictures in that post are mostly of the boat between Oron and Calabar which are of a similar size. Between Oron and Calabar they put more people while between Nigeria and Cameroon they put more cargo.

I think a motorcycle would fit on the flying boats if laid down. They might have to take a few less people though. The boat people will give you the price if they are willing to do it. For my ticket (without a motorcycle) I paid 18,000 cfa (32 usd). Probably would be more for a bike. They will try to rip you off though (but its Africa so this is a given).

In response to #32

..... Last year, CBP asked me the purpose of my trip and I said, "I was engaged in a full-time schedule of religious activities." .....

In about 65 trips direct to Cuba and back, I have never been asked the purpose of my trip. I was once asked if my trip was for business but I simply responded "no" and there were no more questions.
