I'm planning a two week holiday in Thaland on my own in May. I know it will be hot but I really just want to chill after a weeekend in Bangkok visiting friends. Can anyone suggest a nice place to chill but with some life (not a party town, but not an place just for honeymooners)? I'm on a fairly flexible budget.

Hi

We are ending 12 months of travelling ın Thaıland. We have so many LP guides but not the Thailand guide.

Can anyone help me with a suggestion for accommodation at either Kata or Karon beaches on Phuket. And maybe a comment which is the preferable location.

We are both over 50 so do not want party central. All we are looking for is a budget hotel or similar tthat is clean, QUIET and a reasonable price.

Can you still get good accommodation for around AUD 40 a night or so?

Thanks in…

Nothing like supporting the already stated, Farty, if the info is good.

"Nice to see you're still totally banal and useless"
You forgot the good looking part.

You may want to consider the really major enablers, which are the governments of neighboring countries like Thailand, China and India. Their friendly policies enable the trade that supports the junta.

On a somewhat related note, have you all seen the Panties for Peace campaign? Kind of wacky but crazy fun way to insult the junta leaders.

Pattaya

> Methinks the people who say they hate Pattaya are victims of their own prejudices.

No I don't agree. Many people (mistakenly?) envision "a Thai beach" as something like Ko Tao in 1990. Pattaya IS the furthest removed from that, there's just no arguing that it's a very urban, developed, tourist resort. Take away the COMPLETE bar-scene and many people STILL wouldn't like it because it doesn't sync with their expectations of an tropical beach in South East Asia.

Farty, yer a celebrity here on TT Thailand but I dunno if the bigger readership of TWC knows this. For some reason it has been averaging 150 reads per day for the past month - vs say 30 for PP or Lipe which are the usual higher raters.

"as I tend to glaze over when I see your name" - yer in good company baby. Every travel editor in Australia does the same. Every time I get a rejection slip I burst into tears - the doc has me on salt tablets and ordered me not to submit anything in future.

The rodent from lancashire's advice is good. Never ever buy baht in the UK. Some friends of mine bought loads of USD in the UK when it rose to $2 to the pound on the basis they were having a blow out in New York at Christmas. That bit of speculating worked very well for them however the difference with the baht is that there is not parity between the rates offered in the UK and what you will get in Thailand. The difference is usually about 10%
