I have not seen any post from you regarding Costa Rica, as I am active on that branch since 2001.
What are your plans there?
I'm flying down to Golfito and hoping on the new EarthRace ship (a bit like Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior), where I will start my new (unpaid) job as crew. From there, I hope we travel down the west coast of South America.
:)

Where in Costa Rica did this shakedown you claim occurred, and when/what year? Was this near a border? There are Police check points near borders and major roads due to drug trafficking, these type inspections are controlled, with orange cones and in zones, you either are waived on, or waived over. Please elaborate on the situation you describe? Costa Rica has Traffic Control Police, Tourist Police, and general police, they all wear Navy Blue uniforms and usually only carry a side arm. Military Uniform is special operations, as Costa Rica does not have a Military, unlike Panama or Nicaragua. So I suspect you were part of a a check point. How does a guy in a military uniform carry an automatic weapon just appear demanding money? Do you pay a bribe? Was this guy alone? Please, lets have some details. Been going to CR for 2o years and on this forum since 2002....never heard of anything like that.
If you are speeding, and get caught in radar trap, sometimes a foreigner will be asked for a bribe to let you go, please refrain from this and ask to pay the ticket.
Its low season so rental rates are super cheap, but quotes dont include Mandatory Insurance-
Damage Waiver covers the car- Your Credit Card may offer this coverage, make sure it does for Panama. If not, that is a good $15-$25 day depending. When booking on Expedia and some booking sites, you can add the Damage Waiver for $10 day as well, which is a good deal.
Liability Waiver covers you run into anyone or anything and damage to private property, this is usually Mandatory, and you have to buy at time of rental, and usually cost $20-$30 day.
You also should expect a $500-$1000 Hold on your Credit Card, for the period of the rental. This covers the agency should you damage the car and not get the police report, break in, or other uncovered issues.
I would check Trip Advisor for the best and most honest rental agency and locations, as Panama has had some bad reports of scams and rip offs with over charging. (Same with Costa Rica time to time).
FYI- You cant take rental cars across the border. To or from Panama/Costa Rica/Nicaragua.

Hey there! I’m visiting Costa rica with a friend for 8 days in March. I’m a diver and he is not but he wants to try. What are the rules for diving in Costa Rica? He doesn’t wanted the whole trip to turn into a diving trip just enough to get a taste for it. Should I just have him get certified at home or is there a reasonable way to get under the water without a full certification in Costa Rica?

I am travelling through central america in october for 3 months from cancun, through Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and finishing up in Panama. can some recommend realistically how much people usually spend in three months over there.( i will be staying in hostels)
For the Rio San Juan, you can fly to Liberia Costa Rica (LIR) or San Jose Costa Rica (SJO), and head to Los Chiles and to San Carlos, then start your journey, much easier than from Managua Nicaragua (MGA) and a nicer cities to explore and get buses to and from...
A lot more cheap flights to CR daily than anywhere else in Central America.
Poster- Thanks the report, this sounds like what people are telling me down in CR, as a flow of Expats have shuttered their businesses, and lost their investments catering to foreigners in Nicaragua and now, have left the country.
Did you do any surfing in SJDS area? Must of been nice to not have all the Gringo drug heads, local working girls in the bars and no drunk idiots in the streets, a tourist ghetto returned to normal. Nice job Ortega and Socialism, worked perfect!

My husband and I are flying to Liberia Costa Rica the first part of January 2019. We would like to go to the mountains and jungle for the first 4 days and then the coast for the next 4 days. Does anyone have any suggestions of good places to go? Kind of wanted to settle in one place each of the 4 day sections, or not if we are missing out doing this. Love the jungle and wild life especially. TIA

Hi Gilada,
First of all, Costa Rica has different microclimates and it is a tropical country. Weather patterns in Costa Rica vary according to destinations. Corcovado is located in the Osa Peninsula, which has very particular conditions (the highest level of rain in the country). I would definitely suggest March. April is the transition between the two seasons and it is unpredictable. Of course, talking about the Pacific side. You can have more information about weather conditions for trekking in Costa Rica with these guys or ask them for advice and specific details.
Kind regards,
If you want to try out a area for 3-4 months, the best areas on a budget, would be SE Asia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
The other area would be Central America, MX Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
Both the above regions have well beaten backpacker/budget scene, and easy to use transport.
Both have a lot of culture, nature/landscapes and tropical climates to enjoy when it is winter back home....
