Most avoid Playa Jaco, its a party/surf town.

The best option for lodging would be for Manual Antonio. Though most lodging is above the pacific and the park, not on the beach.

Otherwise, smaller beach venues would be Playa Hermosa or Playa Esterillos, very small beach areas with a few options.

Whats expensive for you? What your budget per night in USD?

How are you getting around, rental car or public bus?

Dec is HIGH season, and on the Pacific side is very popular, from Dec 15 onward.

All the good beaches are 5-6 hours from SJ. Nothing on the beach is cheap.

You know the collectivo from Playa only goes to Tulum and the one in Tulum only goes to FCP. I have no idea if one goes south from there FCP. Take the ADO, there really is no adventure in sitting in a collectivo and an ADO leaves CUN for Playa at least once per hour. From Playa a bus goes south about every two hours. you could take a collectivo to Tulum but you will still be waiting for the same bus in Tulum that you would have caught in playa.

If you are interested in the ruins at Chichen Itza and potentially Ek Balam, staying in Valladolid for a couple nights makes sense. The alternative is to do it as a daytrip from Cancun or Playa. But, Valladolid is cute town, and after the hustle and bustle of Mexico City, a slower place might actually be welcome. I've been several times, and spent 3 days there over Christmas. There's plenty to see and do in that area, and there are really reasonable places to stay. This last time, I got a whole house for $40/night on AirBnb.

Spend a week in/around Mexico City, and a week in/around Cancun/Playa/Tulum (pick whichever you prefer). Fly into one and out of the other. Take an internal flight between the two. If a week at the beach is too much, then spend two or three days in someplace like Valladolid, use it as a base to see Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, cenotes, etc.

Just wait until you get there...

There is a Travel Companion Branch as well.

May is low season, so Playa Coco will be pretty quiet.

In response to #4

Thanks for your response wilderone2!

I'm now thinking of heading straight to Valladoid once we arrive in Mexico and spend a couple of days there, then to Tulum and to Bacalar. I now don't think Cancun or Playa would be for us.

We're coming from Australia so trying to squeeze as much is as possible as it's not a short or cheap flight over, but definitely want to make it worth it.

Thanks again!

An obvious itinerary would be: Cancun; Isla Mujeres; Playa del Carmen (or Tulum); Bacalar (or Vallaldolid; Merida); Palenque; San Cristobal de las Casas; Oaxaca. Mexico City. Note that beaches will be very busy until 6 Jan or so. See the ADO website for prices and schedule of first class buses; they serve all these places.

Better start another thread about Cuba in that forum (I did love Havana though). Or spend all your time in Mexico; there's lots more to see than what I've suggested.

Title: Playa Ancon, Cuba: Is it worth visiting?

Destination covered: Trinidad, Cuba

Style: Inspirational advice

Theme: Beach getaway

Synopsis: When visiting Trinidad in Cuba, most tourists take a day trip to the popular and nearby Playa Ancon.
Even though Playa Ancon is considered the most beautiful beach on the South coast of Cuba, some travelers think that it isn’t worth visiting. Either because they believe there are better beaches in Cuba, such as Playa Larga, Varadero and Cayo Coco, for example, or are short of time.
When I arrived in Trinidad for a three-day journey and immediately started asking people if it would be worth visiting Playa Ancon.
The answer from the locals was...
