I'm going to Borneo for a month in August, flying in to KK. I'm staying 4 nights in Kinabatangan Nature Lodge which to is amazing value, £40 a night incl river cruises, night treks and food. I'm looking for more similar places around the same price. There are primarily 3 things I want from my stay:

1) Stay in a traditional homestay, In a non-touristy village, where I can really get in to the forest and see a new way of life
2) Currently in Sandakan area, contemplating travelling to sabah or the Indonesian side, any recommendations for affordable treks I can take into the jungle and maybe camp etc? Or any islands for the best places to see turtles/best snorkelling/scuba spots?
3) I'd love to do some volunteering - can anyone reccomend anywhere where i won't have to take out a mortgage?

Thankyou in advance!

Hi, thanks for the reply!
Belize just seemed like a nice addition since it's English speaking and possibly easier/safer to get around, and Caye Caulker looks quite relaxing. But I don't scuba dive and have got no immediate intention too so wouldn't mind cutting time off there.

I'm happy cutting out Semuc Champey, is this what you're suggesting or are you suggesting flying to make time for it?

Corsica seems like a rather distant jumping off point to the Americas from Cuba.

Hey
Thank you all.
The bottom line is that, while wifi in Cuba is expensive, it is getting better and better!

Trap - I thought that SW used Cuba Travel Services to handle the visas - perhaps that is only in Miami.

Lots of Canadians go south for winter holidays (like me, I´m in Mexico now). Consider Cuba as well.

Would February be a good time of the year, weatherwise, to travel to Cuba? I hope to go to Colombia in January and an American friend has suggested we join up in Cuba after I finish in Colombia. Ideal weather would be dry , sunny and low 20sC.

I gather from a quick reading of posts here that booking accommodation in advance is not necessary and that travel by public transport is feasible.
Many thanks.
