Hello buddies!

My name is Fred, I am Italian and I am in love with travelling. I spend half of the year working offshore on a ship and the other half travelling around the world. Now it is finally Time for Morocco! I will land in Marrakech on October 27th and I will be moving around for about 12 days (the return flight is again from Marrakech on November 7th).
These are basically the things I would like to do during these days:
- Surfing! I am a beginner but I wanna become good at it. I read about Taghazout, Immsouane, Tamraght and Essaouira and I was wondering if it would be better to stick to just one place (which one?!) or rent a car and a surf board and move around. What do you recommend me?
- Sand surfing in the Sahara Desert. I have been in the desert several times (on a camel too), but never in the Sahara. Depending on the required budget and time, I would like to do that. Any info?
- Visit the blue city of Chefchaouen and listen to the 7PM Call to Prayer from the top of the city.
- Take in the smells of the Chouara Tannery in Fes
- Explore the Medina in Marrakech

Beside those activities, any advice on things to do and places to visit are really welcome and appreciated.
I also would like an advice on the itinerary. Is it feasible in a 10-12 day time-span to surf in the South Part and move to the North just for visiting Fes and the Blue City?
Better to rent a car or move by public transportation?

I will be traveling by myself, but most likely a french friend of mine is joining me for few days. If you are around, want to meet up and share part of the trip, it would be great!

Thanks!
Peace and Love

Alfredo

......Louise your itinerary is overly optimistic, from Marrakesh doing an overnight camel trek in Merzouga, not including much else.... you need 3-4 days. And if you haven't been to Marrakech before, 2 days is too short to get value from your visit.

In 10 days, using public transport, you are trying to do too much, Chefchouen is an awkward village to get to and from unless your trip is focused and centred on the north of Morocco, with sand dunes of Merzouga in the mix, too much.

Have you got a copy of lonelyPlanet, a guide to Morocco yet, I also recommend the LP's City-Guide to Marrakech, just reading this should give you an insight into the task you are undertaking, and the wonders awaiting you.

It's a pity to have only one full day for Marrakech and nearly two for Casa...
Not well balanced and I will skip the "desert tour" if you can have one day more for the trip.

Better to leave by Marrakech and visit Meknes from Fes.

..... about internal flights, most daily internal flights are via Casablanca, no idea how long that might take.!
3 direct flights between Marrakech and Fez each week departing 15.20h. on Tue., Fri. and Sun. Trip takes an hour, need to be at the Airport more than an hour before departure, arriving at Fez Airport, will take an hour or more to clear the Airport and travel to Meknes.

Against 12 trains daily arriving in Meknes centre.

Hi TT,

Looking for some help and suggestions on a cheeky 10 day itinerary through Morocco. There will be 4 of us (2 couples) who are from Australia but living in London. We are all very well traveled and by no means will shy away from anything suggested no matter how confronting. We all love a great mixture of culture and adventure.

We have booked flights London to Rabat (29th March) and will fly out of Marrakech (8th April) we have decided to do a self drive trip. So first things first;
- Are there any hire car companies that anyone can recommend or just the usual trawl on car comparisson site?
- Do you reccomend a 4WD or SUV type car or a mornal standard sedan car will be fine (our planned itinerary may dictate your answer)

So at this stage we are looking at the following schedule;

March 29th: Rabat (land 8pm) is Rabat worth spending a day? Otherwise how feasible is it to drive straight to Chefchaouen that night?
March 30th: Chefchaouen
March 31st: Chefchaouen - Fez - are there any stops on the way that are worthwhile
1st April: Fez
2nd April: Fez - Merzouga - Now this is where it gets a little tricky. I have read that Erg Chebbi is pretty touristy and Erg Chigaga might be more interesting, however the latter is further out of the way. Can anyone comment on this? Also duration of stay do you need just 2 nights?
3rd April: Erg Chebbi / Erg Chigaga
4th April: Desert - Atlas Mountains - recommendations on places to see stops along the way
5th April: Atlas Mountains - recommendations on places to see / stay at
6th April: Atlas Mountains - Marakech
7th April: Marakech
8th April: Marakech (fly out 11am)

I know we will be rushed for time and its travelling some kilometers but that is all part of the journey. There is the potential we might drop Chefchaouen from the itinerary and go straight to Fez.

So some questions to everyone
- what are some must stop villages, towns
- how many nights do you think we should allocate for desert trip
- if we stay in the Atlas Mountains should we look at the High Atlas or Anti Atlas, we are also looking for hiking trips in these areas
- any other recommendations of areas of natural beauty which are off the beaten path watering holes, oasis
- any recommendations on activities we should try and explore

Also the itinerary above is not 100% locked in only the cities we fly into and out of so we are certainly flexible if people had other suggestions

Looking forward to the feedback

Rich

It depends on what you want to do since 14 days is not a lot of time. The obvious places in Morocco are Marrakesh and Fes, both justifiably popular and for the desert, Merzouga. I particularly liked Chefchaouen. Or you could go off the beaten path as #15 suggests.

Day 4- Tingir to Merzouga (Sunday 3rd February)
Second day of desert tour
Day 5- Merzouga to Fes (Monday 4th February)

If you want to overnight in sand dunes and go by the car, then it can be OK, but you have to start from Tinerhir at noon for to arrive in time to Erg Chebbi, best 1-2 hours before sunset. If you go by bus then you would stay in Erg Chebbi 2 nights, because the bus arrive late for to go to the camp.

Maybe you would skip Rabat and go from Fes directly to Chefchaouen, if you want to see this town. Otherwise you can skip it, there is not much to see, apart from blue half-painted streets and houses.
Go to Rabat where you can ses blue painted streets and houses and much more than only that. After take a train to Tangier.

We travel because we need to. Because the distance and difference are the secret tonics to the creativity. When we get home, home is still the same, but something in our minds has changed, and that changes everything.

Yes, we depart from Agadir and with first available bus are planing to go to Marrakech. We are thinking of taking a tour of 3 days to Merzouga desert, because we are afraid of driving.

But after Marrakech (and desert tour)we are considering of renting a car and going to Taghazout.

...... when you get to Merzouga you should't have too much difficulty finding a 'tour' to suit you. Most of the 'tours' out of Merzouga are a combination/consolidation of singles, couples and smaller groups pulled together by a tour operator working locally or tourists arriving/sent by other operators from places like Agadir, Fez and Marrakech.

The hotel might be directly involved organising a tour, for sure a two-nights room charges will be built-in then, however, they might not-be, the idea the hotel should keep a room vacant over-night with your baggage, available to you to have a shower and change returning from the sand-dunes, is then unlikely. Hotels in Morocco are cheap compared to similar in most other tourist destination.

Dependent on the amount baggage you (4 persons)have determines the size of the car you hire.
