Best fly from Mandalay or from Yangon to Chiang Mai, do north Thailand, then go

Bangkok
Krabi
Malaysia
Singapore

You don't want to transit through Bangkok too many times.

Apart from a few red banners with slogans about Mayday you won't really notice much but banks will be closed,

I used to regard Chongqing as an overcrowded ,dirty city on the brink of an environmental disaster. It still is ,but an interesting one . If you have any interest in history/architecture then by FoGuanYuan metro佛关园 there is a Flying Tigers Museum( US pilots who fought against the Japanese) , Several early 20th Century Mansions including a couple of museums one to General Stilwell who was the US's representative from 1944 when Chongqing was the Capital. Nice spot bit less frenetic than much of the city

Nan Shan about 45 mins out is the location of Chiang Kai Sheks villa , great views but maybe too crowded on Mayday.
If you go look out for the Lucky Motel scene of a notorious murder few years ago.......
Forget Ciqi it's a tourist trap of the worst kind .
Otherwise the Huguang Guild Hall湖广会馆 is impressive and surrounding area down to the river is worth a wander

A boat trip around the city is worth while great after dark....

Luang Prang has many things to explore compared to Vientiane. You can choose between air-condition bus or Vip bus for traveling to Luang Prabang. Further, elephant trek is considered as the "must-try" thing when visiting the wonderful place. Also, you can visit beautiful and historical temples there such as Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Mai.

Thanks a lot for all the recommendations!

Yes, 5+5+5 Euro covers the basic of the basics for you.

Awesome, then that might actually work!

Koh Phangan and Koh Tao (and Samui) are better during that time of the year weather wise, less affected by the South West monsoon, so might be better for the beach part.

Just did some research on the monsoon part and that seems to be quite an issue in the Andaman Sea, right?
In terms of the weather, it is currently pretty much raining all the time, is that likely going to be the same in August like now?

Sukhothai might be a good stop in the north, see temples by bicycle, has hostels, then up to Chiang Mai. Pai is another favourite stop in the North.

Combine that with the islands in the South and Bangkok and you're busy for a month.

Could stop in Prachuap Kiri Khan, should be possible to find something around 250-300 baht there, low key seaside town, bicycle to local beaches, can break up the journey to the South.

That looks really nice. Didn't think about biking before but actually seems like a very nice idea.
Is there anything I should know about hiring and riding bikes in Thailand?
I'm also going to search on the forum for tips on that.

Use 2nd class and 3rd class seats in trains, very cheap, and fine for those trips (if you do long distance Bkk-Chiang Mai non-stop better take overnight sleeper, cost more, but more comfy for the longer ride, plus safe overnight accommodation).

Yes planned on doing that anyway but with the sleeper might be an option too then.

Might have to buy a bottle of Sang Som or Mekong and mix with coke instead of drinking beer.

Sounds good, gonna try that!

Well, 3 days Bangkok, 3 days SR only leaves you time for one other destination. You mention Chiang Mai. Work out if it covers your priorities.

Of course you can get a visa on arrival at Luang Prabang airport. Who misinformed you that you cannot? Visa fees range from free for Swiss citizens to $42USd for Canadians. You need a passport photo.

I thought the main purpose of cricket was to tune in and watch a bit, and then tune back in 3 days later, and discover that nothing much had changed.
