Interesting information, thank you! I didn't realize there was a Parsi accent in Gujarati.

Hi All,

We are a couple , 30 years old :) We are planning to arrive to Cancun area at September 18th (Tuesday) and leave to NYC at the 24th (Monday) from Cancun airport.

A little bit about us - we enjoy learning about the history and culture of a place, not just laying around at the beach all day long. Also, we enjoy new cultures, neature, animals, food, people, vibes. We love to drink and party but not too much :)

We are coming after 2 weeks travel in Guatemala, so we are not looking for only parties and crazy vibe, mostly chill and exploiting the Mexican vibe at the very best. (of corse one or two parties will be great :))
Also, we wouldn't like to jump too much from place to place because we will do that in Guatemala and we will have 2-3 long day drives .

We are thinking over the best destination or destinations (not more then 2) in Cancun area: Cauncun-Isla mujeres-Playa del Carmen - Tulum - another destination?

We are looking forward to read your recommendations :)

Thanks,
Noam.

Here is a thread from the Sore Thumb Branch that needs to permanently preserved . Magic Bus Thread. As well as being about the Opening poster's interest in the magic buses going to India it touched on the old chestnut about whether the band The Who had anything to do with sending sound equipment to the full moon party at Goa. The Opening Poster went well beyond the call of duty and actually managed to get a list of questions submitted to Pete Townsend via former roadies and management and he actually responded. See the thread to read his answers .

The link you provide is a 3rd party agency.
Book direct with The Airlines. mna.com or Airkbz.com are both reliable and will email your ticket within a few minutes of your booking.

To be more precise: looking at the surcharge they apply, I wouldn't say it's "much higher", but still... I would give a try to the official channel before resorting to third-party sites I don't know anything about.

I’m currently booking accomodation for next summer for a family of 4 ( 2 adults and 2 kids - girls , 8 & 11 yrs).

Plan is roughly as follows .
I’m really confused as to which Island to pick for 5-7 days . We move 4 times in our trip hence not doing 2 islands but would rather Pick one and day trip ?

Dubrovnik - 3 nights
Island - 5-7 nights
Zadar - 5 nights
Rovinj - 4 nights

Hvar or vis ? Looking for great swimming spots , access to restaurants / cafes / bakeries , day trips to other islands and possible other activities like wineries would be a bonus . If it’s Hvar we will avoid Hvar party town and maybe stay Jelsa ? Stari Grad ? Any suggestions ?

Or Vis ? I’ve heard great things about Vis but don’t want it too quiet. .

Any advice would be so welcomed. Travelling a long way from Australia so want to get it right .

Hi Nad,

Check out Tunisia Expat Assistance: https://www.facebook.com/tunexpatassist. They offer a full range of services, which includes car rental (they'll even deliver the car to you and accept payment for the vehicle on card on delivery - they bring a card machine).

Insurance is a bit of an issue in Tunisia as most rental companies only offer third party coverage. I think you may need to buy your own separate coverage in your home country if you want fully comprehensive insurance (or get it via your credit card company).

Tell the owner Omar that I sent you!

Not happy about the political situation in Zimbabwe.

If i avoided all of the countries i didn’t like the politics of (noting that Zimbabwe is a democratically elected democracy, having regular and recent elections) then I wouldn’t go anywhere. And as I voted for the Australian opposition party, that would include my own country.

it is more and more common for people (especially if it is more than one passenger) to take Uber for rides of 100-200km (or even longer) from major airports... personally know people who have taken Uber from GRU to many points that far; from Rio GIG to Conceição de Jacareí (to go to Ilha Grande) or Búzios area, and from Salvador airport to Praia do Forte, Sauípe, Imbassaí etc...

and at GRU, as part of an airport busy 24/7, that can be done at any time... always tons of Uber drivers there (there is even a nearby "bolsão", a special parking area for Uber drivers to line up to wait for fares).

[the problem is often getting a Uber car BACK from these smaller places... as there is not a concentration of Uber drivers in the area]

many travelers have this idea that intercity bus service is, by far, the cheapest travel method in Brazil.... maybe from experiences elsewhere in Latin America, Asia etc.... or even Europe, where the price diff between bus and Uber is huge... not quite the case in Brazil...

coming back from GRU a couple of weeks ago, we were chatting with driver about that... he said that price is around 2 reais (about US$0.50) per km... he also said that it was often better to get one single fare (even if it meant driving back without any passenger) than having to wait for several short rides (and idle time between them)... but he also said that at some point during the return trip, he could start finding passengers... I am talking about UberX (subcompact cars like Ford Ka or Honda Fit) which is what we always use (the cheapest; perfectly fine for 2-3 people unless one is really obese or very tall or a ton of luggage; it is more space than on coach class in most airlines...); it will be more if one wants/needs a larger car from other Uber categories (but not all of them are available in other metro areas in Brazil)

the incremental cost may be worth the convenience of door-to-door service for many travelers.... e.g. each one-way bus fare SP-Paraty is about US$20-25, so two people are already paying US$40-50 (and that does not include the cost if they still have to get to SP intercity bus station)...

as these places are outside the official "service area" for Uber in each metro region, driver is not required to accept ride (they get a message indicating it is a long distance ride), but one eventually accepts it; and it may not take that long, as OP found out.
