The Toucan Guides map is one of the best - has helped me navigate my way on 3 trips to Costa Rica logging over 2500km driving. From their website there is a free download of smaller sections of the entire map or you can order their large folding water proof map for $7.95

You can also order it through amazon.com but its a few $$ more

I'm headed for Costa Rica in the last week of May and hope to hit some of the less touristy parks in central CR and Guancaste (eg Turrialba and Santa Rosa NPs). Looks like I'll be doing a lot of hiking through the mud! Can anyone suggest the best footwear for this? I'm thinking hiking boots.

Thanks,

Nick

I am with 3 guys that just returned from Golfito, Pavones, Zancundo....had a blast.

You need to go to all 3 countries and explore the social, political climates, and also economics, courts and residency obstacles, issues and problems. Medical, banking, ease of doing business as a foreigner are all factors you need to understand, do your homework, and most importantly, hire a well regarded lawyer in the country for all land and financial transactions.

Hey there.

It is possible, but you are going to be a bit rushed and not be able to enjoy each place. I would skipping Arenal, the volcano's cool, but really you can't get super close to it, and since you are really only going to be spending about 11/2 days in each place if you try for all three, you are going to miss out on some stuff.

Hi, you'll probably have to go through San Jose, but there are a few buses that take the eastern route from Arenal towards Tortuguero and Limon. OMEPE is the line that has the most service. Those roads get washed out by rain big time, so bus service is EXTREMELY spotty. So check. Unfortunately, any bus ride in CR takes alot longer because of the rain and the horrific conditions of major roads.

Once you're in Limon, you either need to change buses to get to Puerto Viejo, or heads straight on…

I was wondering if it would be ok to spend a week visiting Costa Rica.
The itenary was to fly into San Jose, stay at a hotel in Alajuela for a couple of days, see the sites around the town and also around San Jose hike up a volcano in Arenal and then maybe hit one of the many beaches not too far away.
Then definately spend two days in Monteverde traveling from Alajuela.
Do the canopy tours and go for a hike around the forest. And then come back to San Jose by the evening and fly out in the…

You do not need to centrally located in CR, just go from one venue to the next, in a Interbus shuttle, a public bus, a private taxi hire, a flight and its easy-

You can do portions of the trip with a tour, like rafting the Rio Paquare and the Tortugero canals, or you can do the entire trip with a tour, but I hate tours, and avoid them like the plaque.

Hi folks,

I will be traveling by myself to Costa Rica in mid-Feb for about a week (I’m a 29 yr old female). I am (or at least, used to be) an experienced traveler but am planning on taking this trip because I’m completely burnt out and haven’t had a vacation in years. As a result, this trip is going to be laidback and relaxing:

-- I pretty much just want to stay in one or two places, with the possibility of day trips, rather than travel all around the country.
-- Beach is a necessity (and…
