Hello Everyone!

I am planning a 4 week trip to India in February and am finding this to be an incredibly difficult trip to plan compared to others in the past. I have finally made progress on the beginning of the trip, with my most important destinations decided on. I have 27 full days in total. I would love some general advice on how long this itinerary would take or just an individual stop if that is all you know well. I like to have time to soak in culture and not feel rushed at any given point. That being said I move quickly and don't waste any time by my nature, and thus in general move at an above average speed. Trying to gauge how long to spend in Varanasi and Rishikesh and to a lesser extent Bodhgaya is proving to be difficult seeing as the "vibe" is such an important component to visiting.

Currently Planned Route:
Delhi (with day trip to Agra) > Sleeper train to Varanasi > Sleeper train to Bodhgaya > Fly to Rishkesh

-I have 4 full days assigned to Delhi including the Agra day trip, Delhi isn't a super important destination besides having a slightly above minimum time there to experience the insanity
-Varanasi!?!? I can't figure out how long I need to be there to take in the mysticism! Any opinions would be dandy
-I really just want to pay my respects to the significance of the events that the Buddha experienced in Bodh Gaya
-I want to do a day hike in Rishikesh, explore the city, and do basic yoga stuff, but I don't actually practice Yoga and am not prepared to pretend I do, a short session or two will likely leave my heart content

Afterwards assuming I have any more time after these destinations, I wanted to try and see some of Rajasthan (Jodhpur, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ranthambore Park, and in particular Jaisalmer), but I am well aware that this is well beyond a lost cause with my time constraints. If I could see any of them that would be considered a success.

Thank you for taking the time reading my essay and any effort in responding to any of my given concerns!

Much Appreciated :)

Hello

I’m planning a trip to Peru for a month, and a further 2 weeks making my way to La Paz.
I’m doing a project for my month in Lima, so that’s fine.

But I don’t really have the money to do an overground tour, and am very sceptical going from Peru to La Paz alone. Does anyone have any advise for where to meet people doing the same route, or any cheaper tour alternatives?

Thank you in advance!

I avoided ALL OYO hotels on my recent trip. The numerous bad reviews made it a no-brainer. Why would you risk it ?

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my backpacking notes from Bolivia trip from Titikaka late to La Paz, Coroico, and Rurrenebaque.
Even if this trip was done already a few years ago, it can serve as indication of conditions of the roads, guides, accommodation for someone that wants to visit these places.

Bolivia is generally safe, even though it is sometimes politically unstable as these recent times show.

Hi
I'm planning to be in Thailand for 12 days and was considering shooting down to Ko Samui for a couple days but I see weather may not be the best this time of year. Wondering if it would be better to spend more time in Chiang Mai or take a couple day trips from Bangkok or chance it in Ko Samui.

Thanks

Hi,
I have two questions regarding my upcoming trip to Russia (June 2020).
1) Is the Golden Ring (around Moscow) well accessible with public traffic?
My planned itinerary is Moscow - Vladimir - Soezdal - Kostroma - Jaroslav - Rostov Veliki - Sergijev Posad - Tver - Novogrod - Sint-Petersburg.
2)Can a self-drive be considered in this part of Russia?

Thanks for your advice.

Planning one month long hiking trip of Northwest & Denali National Parks next June 2020.

My itinerary: Crater Lake. Mount Rainier. Mount Hood. Olympic. Glacier. Denali.

Still deciding whether to fly into Eugene, OR or Bozeman/Missoula, MT to start the trip.

Hikes will be easy to moderate (1-5 miles).

Looking at combo of flying, driving.

Staying in reasonably priced motels, campsites. Nothing too rustic for the bones.

Flying from Seattle or Spokane to Anchorage and driving to Denali.

Preference is to spend a week in Denali.

This is not a rush trip.

I am traveling to Saudi Arabia in January and plan on renting a car. I had to renew my drivers license here in the USA and there have been multiple delays in receiving my actual license. I am now concerned I will not have it for my trip. What I do have is an expired license with my picture on it and a temporary license that is good until February. The temporary license does not have my picture on it and is in English. I am concerned that I will have legal issues and/or a rental company will not rent to me. I had planned on waiting on actually arranging the rent a car until I got in country, since I don’t know my exact dates and wanted to see how the driving was before I committed to it. I also have a valid international driving permit, but Saudi Arabia is not on the list of countries that use it even though the LP states that is all you need.
Anyone know if this will be a problem, or know of something I can do to address this?
Thanks.

Car buying is a hassle and time consuming (use the search function for details). You're always going to get someone who tells you to fly because there's noting to see, which really isn't true. April/May means flowering trees in the East. The Azaleas at the National Arboretum a re a nice consolation prize if you're too late for the cherry blossoms in DC. The train is an excellent way to see the Pacific Coast in California, although not as spectacular as driving, because you go inland before heading to Oakland.

Amtrak is fine because even with delays, the trains are scheduled to permit seeing the best scenery. There are connecting "motor coach" services to the Grand Canyon. I think you can do the same for Santa Fe. The line from Chicago to LA has beautiful landscapes and you might see gorgeous desert colors early on your last morning coming into LA. The trip through the Rockies is spectacular. You will meet and talk to people from the US and from abroad and you'll have a social experience you wouldn't have flying or driving and this may help with planning what you do and might lead you to modify your trip a bit along the way.

The major weather issue in April/May will be rain in the Eastern half of the country--not everyday, but often. I would worry less about cold--temps will be comparable to or warmer than UK, although you'll see snow in the mountains if you cross the Rockies (i.e. go via Denver).

What do you want to see/do? There are places along the train that are not top tier tourist destinations, but have worthwhile stuff--Cleveland has the rock hall of fame and an international standard art museum. Toledo, of all places, has a good art museum that also has an active glass works--people making art every weekend. You could work in Niagara Falls, which is a natural wonder but also a tourist trap--it will be early season and they probably won't be doing boat trips, so fewer people but also more of a "from a distance" experience. You're not going to be able to do, e.g., a classic national park-type trip, but you can see a lot of you let the train map guide you as opposed to just thinking about stereotypical US highlights.
