I agree about doing a West Coast roadtrip and then flying to the East Coast. People don't really get how big the US is. California alone is the size of New Zealand. You could spend 4 weeks on just a California roadtrip.
If you are be visiting Southern California, especially San Diego, you might want to consider getting a Hep A vaccination if you don't have it already. Hep A is a good idea to get regardless if you will be doing a lot of traveling. California is going through the second largest Hep A outbreak in the US ever. The largest one that's being spread person to person. The other one was a one time contamination of spinach, or was it lettuce. I can't remember.
As for driving from the West to the East, it's mostly boring. There will be vast stretches of desert and corn broken up by some truly stunning landscape, particularly in Utah. While sand and corn for hundreds of miles is kind of impressive for the 1st hour or two, it gets monotonous after a while. There's also the risk of being shaken down by the cops. Never carry large sums of cash with you in the US. America has legalized shakedowns. The cops are legally allowed to seize any money you are carrying on you with no charge let alone conviction. I happens less in urban areas, much more in rural areas. Like driving across the middle of nowhere America.
