Thanks Kerry, yes I've found some 1 and a half day tours that run to Khao Yai from Pak Chong that look good. Great to hear you've had good experiences.

Weirdly enough there's actually been a three-part documentary about the wildlife of Singapore on Sky 1 recently, so it doesn't sound so weird! I was thinking of getting some flights via Singapore, so there's no reason I couldn't stick around for a few days. Thanks for the tip!

Fares by train are about 1800-1900baht added up it seems, but you have to go via KL to get to the island next day.
Via K.Bharu won't even make the night boat...will have to spend a night in Surat or even Had Yai.

TBL, no I didn't, when flying on the cheap just head to the airport the night before for km early flight and sleep under some stairs.
Heard that's the way to do it...

Btw, you loose a beach day by going overland.
How do you calculate that in $$$?

If you want to do an overnight cruise then it needs to be booked in advance. All the rest can be done independently or by a local travel agent or your guesthouse. You make no mention of your budget, but you can get a day tour of Halong and Lan ha bays from Cat ba for about 20 dollars. When I did it last April there were no crowds, or masses of other boats. You can get a minibus from Tam coc(Ninh binh)to Haiphong for Cat ba and Ha long Bay, and also get a direct bus from Haiphong to Sapa…

The good news; the north of Thailand has entered into a period of short localized severe summer storms. these presage the rains, and do clean things up. Both Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai had a couple last week.

The bad, there is still haze out there even if far less, and it will be seriously hot this next week. Finally, if you ever caught out in one of these localized storms, be careful take shelter. They can be dangerous due to wind speeds and lightning.

I saw siamangs in various places in Kerinci, but the highest number in a day I saw in Bukit Barisan Selatan. Like a dozen or so!

For Bornean gibbons Danum was great, for Agile gibbons Bukit Baka Bukit Raya, for White-handed ones Khao Yai. India only has Hoolock gibbons in the NE, and they aren't plentiful anywhere.

Hi there,

I'm off to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam + Cambodia in January for 9 weeks solo!

I've pulled together a rough itinerary, as i'm somewhat of a planner and would like some feedback. Not planning on booking much until I get out there so I can flex in terms of days in places, but don't want to bite off more than I can chew.... What do you think? If you think it could do with being cut down, what would you recommend chopping out?

For context, i'm 26 y/o but not so interested in full moon…

Consider taking cooking classes in Chiang Mai. I took a class from Gap's House which was great! I flew to Krabi and on to Ao Nang. I had more time than you so returned overland to Krabi, took the ferry to Koh Phagnan and then went on to Koh Samui.

For your schedule, you could fly from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui and either stay on the beach there or go to the ferry and head on to find a peaceful place on Koh Phagnan. I went to the Lamai Beach on Koh Samui which is quieter than Chaweng. On…

I emailed the Top Garden Guesthouse but unfortunately they are already fully booked for the dates I will be in Chiang Mai. Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions for that area of town? I would like to find something in the $20 to $30 per night price range.

I am going to be in Chiang Mai for the Festival of Lights - Loy Krathong and Yi Peng and would like to find a guesthouse on the river to enjoy the floating lights. Any recommendations? Also, would appreciate and stories or recommendations that would help us to get the most our of our experience of the festival.
