I'm american, had a driver for a week and there were only certain atms that my card would work and he new them, mostly sbi atms. It depends on your card, had 2 different atm cards from 2 different banks. The one that is unlocked around the world didn't work. The wells fargo basic bank card works. It's India, plan on failing, if something actually works, yay, its a bonus

To answer your rhetorical question...

Up until Addisadvisor pointed out that registration at the airport is no longer required, it had seemed to me that the procedure was going to be a little bit tedious. No other countries that I've been to had this formality so with this in mind, it would not have surprised me if other special rules applied to tourists regarding when or where purchasing SIM cards etc. Of course, I wasn't thinking all Ethiopians would have to go to the airport, Michel.

When I wrote, "I suppose that means I'd be able to pick up a SIM and top up in almost any decent sized town in the country without much trouble". This was simply a way to acknowledge and reiterate the new information that was given by Addisadvisor.

I'm in India at the moment. Arrived 10 days ago. I looked for the mythical free SIM card at Mumbai airport but couldn't find any sign of it. I've got a JIO card with 60GB for R1200. This has been easy to use in Mumbai, udaipur, jodhpur and Hyderabad. My companions hit an Idea SIM in KoChi and had a lot of problems getting it to work in Mumbai. Only hassle with JIO is it takes about a day to activate. You need a passport photo and a copy of your passport

airfare is doubled by doing an open jaw flight.

Wow. I am genuinely surprised. If you have checked fares only online, then ask a bricks and mortar travel agent for a quote; or vice versa.

We're still trying to decide the best way of getting to Kodai.

From Bangalore, or Mysore, it is just an overnight train trip, with a 2-3 hours drive from Kodaikanal Road station.

https://erail.in/train-enquiry/16236/MYS/KQN It's the same train, which originates in Mysore and stops in Bangalore.

Is there any other place around Kodai that is interesting and would justify us taking the time out of our too-short trip to go there? It seems like it's in the middle of nowhere.

It's not quite in the middle of nowhere, but it is what the Indians call a "hill station". Essentially a place at higher altitude than the surrounding area; and a place for Europeans to escape the heat - indeed places like Kodai were originally established by foreigners. It's a place to relax, really. Walking trails, waterfalls, a boating lake, pony rides - that kind of thing. There isn't anything 'more interesting' in the immediate vicinity - that would defeat the purpose. If you're prepared to relax and spend some time outdoors, you won't get bored over a few days. For something similar that isn't Kodai, you could head to Elephant Valley - about 22 kilometres away.

Dindigul is about 100 kilometres from Kodai - but I couldn't really encourage you about that. Madurai is the other obvious choice - about 120 kilometres away. But that doesn't work as a 'day trip' from Kodai. Madurai has a fabulous temple; and a quite good Gandhi museum; along with a flower market and a fresh produce market that are worth a look.

If you really only have 2-3 days at your disposal, then I would probably spend them all in Kodai.

EDIT: That said, if you take all your luggage with you, there are non-stop direct flights from Madurai to Delhi for your Golden Triangle leg (or exit flight). I just can't convince myself that travelling from Kodaikanal to the Kodaikanal Road train station, to KSR Bangalore train station, to BLR to catch a plane is a good choice; when you could take a car from Kodaikanal to Madurai Airport. And if you were going to do that, would you then take the opportunity to see the highlights of Madurai in 1 day?

We were thinking of extending our stay in the north to nine days (two days in Delhi, one with an overnight in Agra, and three in Jaipur.) We'd like to add another few days to that part of of our trip, but we want something relaxing and not as touristy. Do you have any suggestions?

If it needs to be said, make sure you're not visiting Agra on a Friday.

Maybe Alwar?

Neemrana?

On the presumption that you will do this leg by car - and at the risk of suggesting other sightseeing stops for a crowded itinerary ...

Just wanted to post a follow up... I was able to unlock the phone in the US for free (never knew that was an option with AT&T). I swapped out the sim card upon arrival. Orange wanted around 40 euro. But I found a "Free" (that is actually the name of the service - Free) store and got a sim card and 30 day plan for just 12 euro. It was just voice/text, no data, but that was all we needed on this phone. Thanks to everyone for the responses!

each State has its own Working With Children & Police checks

I have recently successfully applied for the Victorian version (to do volunteer work in schools) - and the process took more than four weeks - but I now have my card.

I think it's even longer if aiming to work professionally, rather than as a volunteer.

But yes - each state has its own protocols and processes.

We can provide a lot of additional texture when you decide your overall shape.

You should just forget about it... That's the best advice... Clearly something messed up..

Your description. Of the seats is normal, first class or not.. Unfortunately you may have assumed first in India is similar to first in Hong Kong or china..

Delays are normal... Especially in India.

The price is most likely correct.. Because you chose foreign tourist quota.. FTQ adds in a big percentage, about 30%.. Currently that fare is about 6000 rupee so 8000 is right..especially with credit card percent charges etc..

What I don't see is whether your ticket was CNF, CONFIRMED, OR RAC.... YOU may have been WL as well, in which case you are happy some friendly Indians helped you out.. I know you say it was confirmed but somewhere you will see CNF..

I m sorry for your bad trip, nothing is ever easy in India..

Move on, let it go.. You can obviously contunue to fight with Indian railway, but it's much easier in person than online

please excuse me if anyone feels this is the wrong place for this. but it breaks my heart and i want to help the situation. as most everyone is aware, Australia is being devastated by wildfires right now. something that is taking a huge brunt of this devastation is the wildlife. my wife and i have been lucky enough to visit there twice and a place we particularly fell in love with is Kangaroo Island, a fantastic place off the coast of Adelaide.
this island is considered by some the Galapagos of Australia. wildlife variety like the country had 50 years ago and endemic species found nowhere else. most wouldn't think of an island as being susceptible to wildfires like this but due to climate change and hot dry winds about 2/3 of the island has been ravaged by fire. fortunately, the loss of human life has been small. but this is not the case for the amazingly diverse wildlife population.
there is a couple, Sam and Dana Mitchell, who run a wildlife park on the island called Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, that is taking in injured local wildlife and nursing them back to health, especially the Koalas. full disclosure-this is a for profit establishment, not a non-profit. it is heartbreaking to see photos of the adorable marsupials with burned fur or bandages covering their singed paws. some won't make it and many will need long term veterinary care.
it is my hope that those of you who have read this far will have some interest in helping, even if a small amount. i am posting the park's website, where you can access a GoFundMe page to donate. additionally, i will add a direct link to the donation page and a link to an article regarding the crisis in this magical place. any amount will be appreciated and help treat these animals back to health with the hopes of someday releasing back to the wild those that can be.
Thank You for reading and any donation you contribute. Happy New Year.

Let's start with your question about credit cards, because this indicates how much more research you have yet to do:

  • Foreign credit and debit cards DO NOT Work in Iran. You will need to carry all your spending money with you as you enter the country. You can buy a local prepaid card that will work ONLY with Iranian ATMs and POS machines, but you will need to carry all your money into the country initially.

Both USD and EUR are widely accepted, but make sure the notes are almost new and are in good condition.

Buying a SIM is easy.

You can get by with English.

There is a lively Couchsurfing community inside Iran, but you will need to install a VPN before you enter the country to make the connections. Do a search for recommendations, although I have seen advice Psiphon works.
