I've asked in Thailand only to find they were using the same pastes I can get at home. And in 1990, we had bbq chicken at a food stall at some park outside of Chiang Mai. My husband asked the guy about his chilli sauce and lo and behold out came the bottle of commercial chicken dipping sauce. We even bought a couple of bottles off him and carried it home. So that sort of stuff isnt limited to just places that cater to westerners.

Hi,

I know Maungmakan beach nearly Dawei, Chaunghta beach, and recently I have visited Ngapali, my favorite beach in Myanmar. Now it's possible to find cheap guesthouse not so far to the beach and good restaurant. You can go there by bus from Yangon, more than 13 hours.
You can look my photos...

It is really hard to give any advice as you have not stated what your interests are and you have chosen an itinerary on the basis of places being close to together. There are certainly lots of places you are missing but in 4 months you cannot see them all. If that is your order of your trip i would look at Chiang Mai after Luang Prabang and then onto Bangkok. This gives you around 15 days in each place which is probably too long in each place with the exception of Bali. 4 months is a good amount of time to see a fair bit of each country.

Some place we can fly into from Chaing Mai?

You can fly direct to both Krabi and Trang. The beach at Ao Nang, near Krabi Airport and Krabi town, where most budget-minded people stay is not very good, nor is the ambience. But, a short boat ride away is gorgeous Railay Beach. The problem there is that most budget accommodation is not on the really wonderful beaches where the accommodation is expensive. Krabi town is interesting for a day of exploring, but since your time is tight, I'd head straight down to Koh Lanta. After a few days there, getting a boat to Koh Muk is easy and quick. Then head to Trang for your flight back to Bangkok.

You can also fly direct from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui. When I last checked only Bangkok Airways was flying that route and they are always overpriced. I much prefer the Andaman Coast islands over Samui anyway.

Hey Mads.

With a budget that high, they can pretty much stay anywhere. My monthly condo rent is less than US$300. LOL

When my best friend and her new husband came to Chiang Mai on their honeymoon about 4 years ago, I put them up in the 3 Sis hotel (http://the3sis.com/)(https://www.google.com/maps/place/The+3+Sis/@18.7868059,98.9883037,19.75z/data=!4m7!3m6!1s0x30da3a98d3bb72bf:0xd32cfb022c51b3d2!5m1!1s2018-10-18!8m2!3d18.78689!4d98.9884955_) They were quite happy with it. If you book through Agoda.com the current rate is about US$60/night. It is inside the old city and has some good things (wats/food/etc) within walking distance. I think they might like it.

A day trip over to Chiang Rai to see the White Temple would definitely rank as a cultural experience. LOL Possibly a trip down to Sukhothai, the old capital. Doi Suthep, the temple on the mountain above the city ranks as a must do, I think.

What you should do is Saigon (with one day beautiful organized excursion Cao Dai Temple of Tay Ninh + tCu Chi Tunnels), then the Mekong Delta Saigon-Cai Be-Ferry to An Binh Island (1 night in the excellent Phuong Nam Homestay in the vilalge of An Binh (+ if you wish, one day bicycle and boating in the island), then ferry An Bin-Vinh Long and bus VL-Can Tho (1 night), then Cai Rang Floating Market in the morning and bus CT-Rach Gia (1 night), then speed boat RG-Phu Quoc, return to Saigon by plane.

This said, beach PQ + beach Muine is a lot of beach. You should consider going by bus to beautiful Dalat, spend 3 days there (lots to visit !), then return to Saigon by bus or plane

What's wrong with lots of beaches? Many people, especially westerners from cold Europe travel halfway around the world just to spend time on the beach. Mui Ne isn't just a beach though, it has sand dunes like no others you'll find in SE Asia so it's quite unique in that sense. Whereas Phu Quoc is mainly just beaches with a little bit of jungle and waterfalls in the central part of the island. However, it's beaches are longer and sandier and with fewer rocks than say Thailand's Ko Chang, so I would recommend Phu Quoc over Ko Chang for that reason. Also, it has an airport located on the island making it easier to access. I am not aware of any flights to Phu Quoc from Singapore, but there are lots of domestic connections from Saigon.

Hi!

I'm going to Vietnam for the first time in March (Arriving in Hanoi the 15th at 1:30 PM, leaving from Ho Chi Minh the 29th at 7:15 PM, 14 days). Can't wait! We're a couple, and will probably be going backpacking style.
I'm in the planning phase, and from what I could gather, the main places I'd love to visit are (I've excluded Nha Trang and Mui Ne from the list after reading too much negative things):

  • Sapa
  • Hanoi
  • Halong Bay
  • Ninh Binh
  • Phong Nha National Park
  • Hue (Motorcycle ride on Hai Van pass?)
  • Hoi An
  • Da Nang
  • My Son
  • Da Lat
  • Ho Chi Minh

Now, I know this is way too much, so I wanted some help to reduce this list. The ones in bold are the ones I wouldn't scrap off the list.
My main hesitations are :

  • Sapa or Ninh Binh ? Or only Phong Nha ?
From what I could read or understand, Sapa is like 6 hours from Hanoi, so 12 hours travel total (the main negative point). The place looks stunning. But I've read that it has become very touristy, and that the place didn't handle that very well. Ninh Binh on the contrary, is "on the path" from Halong Bay to Phong Nha National Park, and looks also stunning. If Phong Nha is pretty similar to Ninh Binh, maybe skip the latter ? I understand Sapa and Ninh Binh are very different from each other, so I'd love your input on this matter.

  • Hue, Hai Van Pass, Hoi An and Da Nang (My Son)?

What are the more interesting places ? Is it worth it to do all three, motorcycling on the Hai Van Pass ? What is the best road of the Hai Van Pass (Hue-Hoi An, Hoi An-Da Nang, etc. ) Is it worth it ? From where should I go to My Son ?

  • Da Lat and/or South
I have a lot of planned things in the north and center, but only Ho Chi Minh in the south. Is Da Lat worth going ? What other south places should I check ?

At the moment, I have a file like this to help me plan the travel.
I'm scared of doing too much, rushing things and ruining the experience. But also to stay too many days in a location that doesn't need it.

I'd love your opinion on this ! Thanks in advance.

"The budget per night is probably something around 200 USD."

-

This nightly price range will give you a very nice hotel! FYI. There are still hotels in Chiang Mai under $30 US per night that can be found with A/C and private bathroom. At 200 bucks a night you get a nice place with a lot of butt kissing! A hotel around $100 US a night is not too shabby too!

I think your parents should spend at least a few days in Bangkok and then fly to Chiang Mai. After their Chiang Mai visit finish up with another night or two back in Bangkok again. Bangkok is worth the visit! Quite a few tourists in your parents age range visit Thailand. One hotel in Bangkok that is in a good location for malls, city rail service and other things to walk to is the Grande Centre Point Terminal 21. Located in Asoke area. They can use local travel agencies for booking shared tours. (Lots of travel agencies.) Bangkok is a big city! There is no single location where they can walk to everything!
https://www.grandecentrepointterminal21.com/
http://www.urbanrail.net/as/bang/bangkok.htm

The month you visit will determine weather and hotel room rates. Highest price is December - January, especially Christmas - New Years time frame.

"Bear in mind they are old and cannot handle too much chaos....." 5 5 5

Did they tell you this or is this an assumption you are making? If they are truly helpless maybe you should guide them through their visit for every day. (If you ever see "5 5 5" in a post concerning Thailand - the number 5 sounds like "ha" as in ha, ha!)

After Chiang Mai, a final day or two in Bangkok will give them the opportunity to do some shopping and be an easy ride to the airport. If flying long distance there are quite few time zones they go through with some jet lag. A flight that arrives during the day or early evening will make their arrival less threatening and easier to adjust to than something arriving after midnight.

In Chiang Mai, like Bangkok, there are shared tours they can sign up for in person. Tours to out of the city temples and even Chiang Rai, etc.

There are tourists in your parents age group who routinely visit Thailand without any problems. Of course, for every country you visit - you or they - should investigate any scams to be aware of and read up on how to use local transportation. If you are with them then you should bone up on what to do.

There are private tour guides that can be booked. For Bangkok there are out of the city tours to River Kwai, Ayutthaya Bang Pa In, etc.

Good luck.

Hey everyone,

I'm going to be solo backpacking (24 yo) in Thailand over the festive period and was just looking for some up to date information on some good ideas of where to go, and maybe some people to spend it with! In November, I'm covering Bangkok, Vietnam, Chiang Mai etc, and in December (from the 10th ish) am planning to spend on the islands as I want to do a scuba diving course on Koh Tao for 3 days. I'm prepared for busyness wherever I end up at this time of year, but I'd love some suggestions of places that have some parties going on but also the opportunity to explore and chill out. Thanks very much and can't wait to hear from you!
