Puerto Natales is the closest town to Torres del Paine. No need to go to Punta Arenas.

Torres del Paine is a jewel and I'd highly recommend it. However, you are best off staying in or near the park itself and do day hikes there. You will need your own transport to really get around though.

I’ve heard there’s not much public transport. People have said that they relied on group tours or hiring a car for a few days.

Just looking for someone with experience who has more info on this.

It will be better in my opinion.
I suppose you will move by public transports (and planes) and by security, it's always better to have some flexibility.

I don't know the current situation regarding the road but it remains better to start "early" and use a public transport from the "bus station".

I have the Costa Rica guide form Lonely Planet, but most decisions I´ve made were based on blog posts, forums, and comments.

I can see now how combining Sarapiqui with Puerto Viejo would have made sense, from a logistic pov. Another reason for me doing Caribe last though, was that this will probably the most relaxing part of my holidays. I wanted to do the chilling-out and relaxing at the beaches at the end. And anyways, I´ve already booked all accomodations already a few weeks ago, apart from one of the two lodges near Puerto Viejo that I´ve posted some days ago. I started panicking that things would get booked out as I´m travelling in high season.
