Hey hey Pathfinders!

What have you Instagrammed this month? Share links to your best travel snaps on Insta, for the chance to be selected as the Pathfinders Instagram of the month and featured on the LP blog!

To be considered for the monthly Instagram round-up, please include a short explanation along with the image link to give us a little more context about the shot.

Whether your picture was taken abroad on a big trip or somewhere closer to home, your submission shouldn’t just be any old ‘nice shot’. It needs to represent a destination in a way that intrigues us, gets us daydreaming or even reaching for our passports!

Please disclose any sponsorships that may be tied to the image, and please ensure you give geographic detail about where the place pictured is. Ideally, the image should not have a white border around it.

Images need to be your own, and originally posted in the month of January 2019. For your entry to be valid you must be signed up to Lonely Planet Pathfinders. You can post on the thread a maximum of 3 entries for the month. Entries beyond this limit won't be considered.

Here’s an example:

Destination: Acaime Peak, Cocora Valley in Los Nevados National Park. Colombia. South America.

Context: Whilst in Colombia (with G Adventures) we captured this on on our morning hike, which took us upwards of 2700 meters! There was the chance rain would ruin the shot, but in the end it provided just that right amount of extra detail and texture to the image.

Deadline for submissions: Midnight (GMT) 31 January 2019

If successful, we will let you know in this thread, and PM you with more details. Successful applicants will feature in a blog post on lonelyplanet.com. We will link to your Instagram profile and blog in the post.

Good luck and (snap) happy travels! :)

Hi! Planning a road trip in January with my husband and 3 year old and would like thoughts on my first draft itinerary. My daughter has been on many long car rides (7 hrs) and flights in her short life but wondering if I’m trying to do too much?

Day 1: Arrive in SJO
Day 2: Drive to Tortuguero
Day 3: Tortuguero
Day 4: Tortuguero
Day 5: Drive to El Castillo
Day 6: Arenal
Day 7: Arenal
Day 8: Drive to Monteverde
Day 9: Monteverde
Day 10: Monteverde
Day 11: Drive to Quepos
Day 12: Manuel Antonio
Day 13: Manuel Antonio
Day 14: Drive to SJO
Day 15: Fly home

  • Should I replace Tortuguero with Puerto Viejo given the rest of the places we are visiting? I like nature and beaches equally.
  • Should I replace one of the super touristy spots with something else given it’ll be peak season? If so, where?
  • I’m not a fan of being in a swarm of tourists. Is this going to be like standing in front of the Mona Lisa type crowded? I’m regretting my travel dates already!

Hello all - I have 3-4 weeks free to travel starting early February. Looking to find somewhere cheap, peaceful, safe and sunny where I can settle for a few weeks to read/write/chill, maybe with some interesting side trips of 1-3 days. I'm female, late 30s, friendly but not a partier. A few years ago I spent 4 weeks in a small place in south Goa (Patnem), living in a basic cabana near the beach, did yoga every morning, had lunch at a local cafe, swam in the sea in the afternoons, rented a bicycle for little excursions to larger neighbouring towns, etc. I'd like something like that again, but I don't want to go back to India. I feel like south-east Asia could be a good bet but I don't know that part of the world - is there somewhere in southern Thailand where I could find a similar setup? I quite like hostels and don't mind staying in a dorm as long as it's civilised/quiet Don't want to go anywhere hectic, hoping to avoid the whole gap year/full moon party scene! Would appreciate any recommendations... thanks!

Another idea.... do the top tourist destinations in Italy if you haven't been yet.
As you are out of the peak season, weather may not be perfect but also the crowds somewhat smaller.
A 3 week trip could include a day or two in Venice, Ravenna, several days in Rome, stops in Florence, Parma, Bologna, Milano, and some smaller places like Cinque Terre. Just to name the places that are well connected on major train routes. There is more stuff in northern Italy than you can see in one trip. It might be an area to explore and come back.

FYI, Death Valley in mid September will still be very hot, over 100f-38c, just a drive through. if you go that way.

The southern deserts/Red Rock of Utah are stunning, it's high desert, stuff you've probably never seen before. It's NOT flatland desert with just rock. It's absolutely beautiful.
You will see a huge variety of scenery.

From Mesa Verde, Durango, over Hyw.550 to Ouray and Telluride is all forest, mountains, streams, lakes, falls etc, pure high mountain scenery. Jaw dropping country.
Think you have 3 mountain passes between Durango-Ouray, all above 10,000ft, highest I believe is over 11,000ft-3300 meters, pure alpine country.
Good chances at that time of year you will see nice colors, especially with the Aspen tree's. It's pretty cool with all the elevation changes you'll go through a variety of the Autumn colors.

Even the route from Zion, Bryce, Escalante and Capitol Reef, is a big mix of high desert, tree's and peaks in the distance, you won't believe it, stunning scenery.
You might enjoy the hike to Calf Creek Falls off Hwy.12. http://www.climb-utah.com/Escalante/calfcreek.htm

Heck the Grand Canyon on the top of both rims is all forest.......

You can raft/kayak on the Colorado River in Moab.

Kazakhs and Kyrgyz basically speak the same language. It's just that the Kazakhs speak it in the plains, and the Kyrygz speak it in the mountains.

Not so much damage in Kobe's harbour area, I was expecting more. One very poor boat, in absolute pieces, floating in the port though, and an unexpected military submarine. I saw more damage on a hiking trail I was hoping to use here in Kyoto - closed for quite a while though, I expect.

I'm with iamgorman on both scores (no pun intended). My additional caution is that even if you do speak to an Indian bureaucrat, their natural response will be the most conservative - to protect themselves - and that means saying "no".

I travel with medication - I also ensure that medication is in the original pharmacy packaging, and is accompanied by a letter from my prescribing doctor. My bag has been searched more than once, and no Indian customs official has been the least bit interested in my medicine bag.

Generally speaking - India (like lots of the world) is yet to legalise medicinal cannabis. This, from a country which has Government Authorised Bhang Shops.

It is also - generally speaking - narcotics and psychotropics that the authorities are interested in. The recent crackdown on Tramadol trafficking out of the country is a good example of this.

So - if your Sativex is prescribed; in its original packaging; and you are carrying an authorisation - your own risk profile makes the decision for you.
