Normally fairly cool up there I believe - may not need the ac. I stayed at a cracking little place at one end of town on the river. Come out of the bus station, turn left and at the end of the road fork left, there is a bridge over the river on your left. Little huts with mosq net, double mattress, I think it was about 150b

Krabi is way nicer than Samui, which is now over-priced and polluted - don't expect clear water there.

Ferries are safe, but a bit hit and miss - they almost always eventually turn up, but the smaller boats are often late.

You don't need to book in advance in low season, but you do in high season, unless u want to spend ages traipsing around looking for a room, which will be the grottiest, most expensive one left. In mid-October u should be OK to just walk in.

- Beach
(off course palm trees, bright sand, clear water; will make a nice atmosphere / not too much rain).

- Some activities besides the beach;
(doesn't have to be huge highlights; a nice hike / go around by motorbike /…

^^ assuming there is a boat going from Ao Nang at that time.
However, there may be a boat, but you might have to wait a while for enough customers to fill it, unles you want to do a full price trip on your own.

Go to Soi Bangla, find a bar you like, and ring the bell. You'll have a good time.
