I’m in Chiang Mai and want to go to koh samui.
Flights are a bit pricey-Aprox 6500 b. from what I just looked up... I can fly to bkk from Cnx for Aprox 1200-2200... not a big fan of buses as cause my time is some what limited.... can I take a ferry from bkk or near bkk to koh samui?
Any info greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Paul

Hello everyone,
I plan to leave New Zealand and go to France by bike. I plan to start in August in New Zealand to make the following route: Australia (Sept./Oct.)-Indonesia-Singapore-Malaysia-Thailand (Nov./Dec.). Then I hesitate to do Burma-Bangladesh-India-Pakistan and Kazakhstan to Pamir highway (Jan./Feb./March) or after Thailand continue to Cambodia-Laos-China and go to Kazakhstan to do the same. Pamir highway (Jan / Feb / Mar) to later make Tajik-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Armenia-Georgia (April / May) -Turkey (June) -Bulgaria-Serbia-Bosnia-Herzegovina (July) - Croatia-Slovenia (August) -Italy-Switzerland (Sept.) France (Oct.).
I'm sorry about the long list, but is there anyone who has made a similar trip or made a stretch of my itinerary that would like to share with me some advices on the road, visa, weather or others .
Thank you so much,
Isabelle

Hiya folks
does anybody has some first hand experience on the adaman sea coast?
Heading to thailand in mid march for a couple of weeks, and after a week or so around chiang mai I'd like to spend another week or so at the beach.
thinking about flying to phuket and then ideally would like to see one or two islands/nice beach spots in the area before flying/bus back to BKK
We're on our early 30s, into chilling at the beach and snorkelling/diving, ideally would love a rustic bungalow on the beach or something of the sort rather than a 4star - something away from big crowds anyway
any advice?
thanks
Definitely include Chiang Mai for more experience of Thai culture. 20 days is not a long time and there is plenty in Thailand to keep you interested. I love Bali, but unless you really have your heart set on visiting there, stay in Thailand. Otherwise, switch gears entirely and spend the 20 days in Bali.
There are 4 crossing points and none of them are closed.
Only Myawaddy is really a viable option on a bicycle.
Tachilek is a problem, because as I already said, the road inland from Tachilek is ^closed to foreigners^ and you can't cycle or take a bus on this route, you HAVE to fly!
You can easily enter at Kawthaung, BUT, to cycle north from there, the problem you will have is that there is hardly any ^foreigner registered^ accomadation which means you will have to cycle very long distances every day to reach a town that you can stay the night in- at least 120km a day, possibly more. If you can't manage that, then you risk being stranded for the night with nowhere to stay.
There is also a crossing at Htee Khee, but this doesn't accept evisa only a ^paper^ visa. It is also very remote and the nearest town with accomadation is 5 hours away by bus, which means if you try to cycle it you will get stranded again!
Myawaddy is the best crossing on a bicycle because there are plenty of towns in that part of the country within cycling distance with accomadation available.
Because of the various ^complications^ I have just described, you will almost certainly have to exit the country at Myawaddy as well, unless you are prepared to put your bike on a plane and fly from Mandalay to Tachilek.

///I posted also on the country specific forum - I have no idea where is better//
Hello,
I am starting soon my trip across Asia. The first stage is to cycle from Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam to Mandlalay in Myanmar.
My planned route: Ho Chi Minh - Phnom Penh by Bavet - Siem Reap - Battambang - border crossing in Pailin - Pattaya - Bangkok - Mae Sot - Mandalay.
Could you advise me on safe routes to pick on this route?
Are the following roads safe:
Ho Chi Minh - Phnom Penh main road
Phnom Penh - Siem Reap (maybe better to choose southern route via Battambang and go to Thailand by Paoypet)
Route from Bangkok to Mae Sot - big question?
Mae Sot - Mandalay - I plan to use road no. 5.
Any help greaty appreciated ;)
Mikolaj
You are welcome.
I was actually suggesting to start your trip in Chiang Mai (and just fly via Bangkok) and keep Bangkok for later on. Because Chiang Mai is more relaxing than Bangkok.
Its 3 hours from Koh Samet to Bangkok, so not further than Hua Hin (but the beaches are nicer). Or you could end up on Koh Chang on day 12, and your friend spends 2-3 days on the beach with you, travels by transfer / ferry / transfer to Trat airport (about one hour) and flies out of Thailand (Trat - Bangkok - home). Koh Chang is even better in terms of beaches than Koh Samet and get less "weekend visitors".

I'm sure there is a story behind this OP, but we are not going to get.
"Thailand attracted .................... and sadly low-life who ends up free jump or hang himself."
I agree, BUT if you post it up like that, then you have to also state that a bunch of those people get help taking their balcony dive or adjusting the rope. The Itchy variation, and that can't be good for tourism.
