Not missing much anyway, IMO. Definitely not worth the extra cost of a speedboat.
500 baht a night aint gonna go a long way on PP in 2012, particularly if you are not interested in Ton Sai/Loh Dalum central.
Problem is that nearby there aint any budget places until you get to Viking/Maphrao which is only 5 minutes walking time closer to town than Long Beach. Still gonna be paying more than 500.
Maybe you could check the Sand Sea Resort where I stayed last visit - this is down the far end of Ton Sai beach abt a 10 minute walk into town. 500 baht wont cut it but you may be able…
I walked Ton Sai to Laem Thong where Holiday Inn is located in 3+ hours - I'm very fit but I was so buggered (killer slopes in the hills) I took a longtail back (and I'm a cheapskate).
So yeah, Laem Thong aint good for people wanting to go into town often unless they are prepared to spend a lot on boats.
I reckon Bay View or its sister resort (forget the name - it's on my PHI PHI page HERE ) would suit your asks. Quiet, fabulous outlook, 15 minutes max walk to town.

Not much for budget accommodation on Phi Phi. Personally I liked Koh Lanta and specifically Khlong nin beach. It is a 2 km long sandy beach great for walking. swimming. Lots of accommodation and restaurants. We paid 700 baht per night in April at Sunset bungalows right on the beach - very clean and good food. Massages 300 baht.
From Koh Lanta you can day trip to do some snorkeling trips.
If you really want Koh Phi Phi check out Ao Toh Koh. It might fit your needs.
Find Tezza's link he has maybe one of the best Thailand Island blogs ever...on it there is a complete guide to Phi Phi
Sure it's possible. Bus from Chiang Mai, Bus from Bangkok to Phuket or Krabi. Swim the last bit. No, get the ferry. All up less than 48 hours. Add up all the costs, it's about the same on AirAsia and 44 hours less farting around.
Got a fair few suggestions re cheapies ranging from Ton Sai beachside to the laid back west coast on the PP and TRIP REPORTS pages HERE might help your planning.
Perfect solution, and we did it last week. The restaurant to the place we stayed is on the beech and they put tables and chairs out on the sand for lunch and dinner. Bay View Resort and Arayaburi. The food is very good, the service is Thai resort, so very good (not like some of the tourist restaurants). They even came out with citronella spray for us. The prices are very reasonable. If you like sea food then they are brilliant. It is also quite private. Yes on Ton Sai Beach yet private. Walk…
I'm travelling around a little on the hoof at the moment, due to some uncertainty over Mrs G's obligations which may, or may not, require her to go back upcountry to grease palms or sign forms to get her son into military academy before we return to UK.
This means I'm having to book flights and rooms etc as we go, rather than get everything nailed down in advance.
I need good internet access to do this. I saw somewhere that Phi Phi only has dial up connections, is this correct?
If so I'll…
Got a whole bunch of nice places. A lot depends on your budget, whether you want easy access to town, good snorkelling off the beach, no crowds, choice of restaurants etc - maybe you could look the places I've stayed at or would like to stay on my 2 Phi Phi pages HERE to see what you fancy.
