Remember that is high season and in my opinion there are at least 2 places you should avoid . Ko Phangan any time near a full moon . Especially at the height of the season . (Think Magaluf and drunken teenyboppers and lots of senseless noise ). Koh Samui anytime . Its a sleazy tourist trap . And Chiang Mai as an overrun by tourists nonevent of a place , unless you find red brick walls interesting . The hordes of Chinese tourists photographing a gap in a redbrick wall ( taffae gate ) amazed me…

I think my 7" tablet will probably be replaced with a smartphone for my next trip. Although I may still bring the tablet as I do like the larger size.

Kettle = tea in morning, porridge for breakfast, drinking water and the occasional 3 in 1 coffee.

Thailand isn't an island.
November/ December are monsoonal for the gulf islands-- Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Other than choice of island, your itinerary is pretty standard so no worries there.
Guest houses and more and more, hostels, are the preferred options for young travellers. Sometimes you might find places that don't have a web site. We have been staying at the same places i n Bangkok and Chiang Mai since 1995. Th

OP, have sent you a PM ( private message)ey are both family owned…

Hello all!

I plan to go to Thailand between 21 dec to 2 jan with my wife.
It will be our first time in Thailand. More than that it will be our first travelling experience.
Here is what I have in mind for the places :

---Arrive in Bangkok
-BKK 2days
---Flight to Chiang Mai
-CM 3days
---Flight to Phuket or Krabi
-X Island 4days
The big question is in which island we will stay!
We doesn't like party or bar, more like a quiet place. The idea is to go for day trip around that given island.
---Back to BKK

It takes you 2 hours from Hai Phong to Yen Tu and 3 hours from there to Ha Noi. so I think one day is enough. At Yen Tu look for a good-looking guesthouse, buy something for lunch and you could leave your luggage until you come back there.

Consider asking your question on www.crazyguyonabike.com - THE website for distance cycle travel. I read there a couple journey Mandalay-Mae Sot-Chiang Mai as well as plenty other loops in country.

Check if by putting your bike (and yourself) on a bus, you would be able to cross the border more easily. Or maybe a short plane ride?

Here is an account of a short three days but very pleasant trip in the Shan Hills, text in French, pictures in universal language:

Ko Kood (Kut) does have some backpacker priced accommodation back from the beach such as Bai Pen and Doy Guesthouse at Klongchao. In the beginning Ko Kood was an expensive resort island catering mainly for wealthy Thai business people. But in the last 15 years mid range and lower priced accommodation sprang up .
