Land in Schipol airport and go to Leiden
Relax and walk around Leiden. Stay overnight in Leiden (any suggestions for places of stay?We prefer home stays/ bed and breakfast so that we get to meet local people and interact with them)
Day 2
Take a bus to Keukenhof. Come back to Leiden and take train to Kinderdjik
(can we carry our luggage and leave it somewhere in the bus station in keukenhof ? so that we don't have to go back to Leiden)
Overnight stay in Kinderdjik
Day 3
Explore Rotterdam . Come back to Kinderdjik
Day 4
Take a guided tour to The Hague and Delft (would there be guided tours from Kinderdjik ? or so we have to go and stay else where? ) Overnight stay in either Kinderdjik or as you may suggest
Day 5
We can either go to Monnikendam or Edam (or you can suggest any quaint villages nearby)
Day 6
Take train from Kinderdjik or where ever we stay previous day and go to Maastricht. Explore that area , perhaps Aachen
Day 7

Take the 7 hour train to Black forest. Stay overnight in Black forest (is there any alternative to reach black Forest area faster?)
Day 8 , 9
Black forest , explore black Forest.
Day 10
Take 6 and half hours train from Black forest area to Zwolle (or to Deventer? one of the two)
Stay overnight in Zwolle/ Deventer (is this is a good idea? or where else can we stay as a stop over before going to Geithooorn?)
Day 11
Explore Zwolle / Deventer and then take train to Geithoorn. Overnight stay in Geithoorn
Day 12
Explore Geithoorn. Also go to Vehuwe and come back. Stay one more night in Geithoorn

Go to Orchideeen Hoeve.Spend the day there.
Take train to Utrecht. Meet with friends there. Overnight stay in Utrecht
Day 14

It is high unlikely such a rail pass would save you money.
A 3-day pass costs you EUR 121 (assuming you are sensible enough to travel 2nd class), which comes at EUR 40 per day; a 4 day-pass is EUR 35 per day.
Compare that with point-to-point tickets. Amsterdam to Den Haag (The Hague), for example, is EUR 12,20. Den Haag to Brugge with the Intercity (no reservation needed; valid on all IC trains) is EUR 25.
Check the price of other trips on the websites of NS (Dutch Railways) and NMBS/SNCB (Belgian railways).

Hi all! Planning a trip through the Low Countries in June (me, wife, teenaged kids). We've got a lot packed in with plans to travel by train through it all. We are experienced travelers and have selected this itinerary for a variety of reasons. The big question is whether to get a Eurail pass for all trips, get direct tickets for all, or a shortened Eurail Pass and some direct tickets. Here's the plan for train travel days:

Amsterdam to Den Haag for the day then to Brussels

Brussels to Bruges, with stopover in Ghent

Bruges to Bastogne (actually, Libramont then bus to Bastogne)

Bastogne (via bus to Libramont) to Luxembourg

Luxembourg to Arnhem

Arnhem to Schiphol

A BeNeLux Pass covers all this, but the best route from Luxembourg to Arnhem actually goes through Germany (which the pass does not cover). I'm thinking the best thing might be a pass for 3 Days, direct tickets for the last two trips (one through Germany) and day tickets between Brussels and Bruges with Ghent in the middle.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

My husband and I plan to visit Netherlands for 15 days end of April to early May 2019. The following is the itinerary that I have made. Please let me know if it is sensible and if I need to include or exclude other places.

Finally someone who wants to take the time to see more than just Amsterdam! And someone who does not hop around all over Europe to 8 countries in 2 weeks. :-)

  1. Amsterdam (hoping to land and stay for a day, then head to keukenhof, then again come back and keep this as a base to do day trips to the places mentioned below)
  2. Keukenhof 1 day

There are direct buses from Schiphol airport to Keukenhof, which is southwest of the airport (and Amsterdam is northeast of the airport). So perhaps you want to store your luggage in lockers at the airport, visit Keukenhof, then go pick up your luggage and travel into Amsterdam.

  1. Rotterdam, Delft, The Hague (day trip)

As someone else said: don't you want to see Amsterdam itself? Then stay in any other city, you will save heaps of €€€! Amsterdam is very expensive for accommodation, and there is no point in wasting so much money if you don't actually spend any days in the city.

  1. kinderdijk (day trip)

If you take Rotterdam as a base, Kinderdijk is just a waterbus (boat) ride away.
If you stay in Amsterdam after all, then visit Zaanse Schans instead. It also has multiple windmills, craftmen's shops like wooden shoe craftshop and cheese making, and little shops and a cafe.

  1. Utrecht ( day trip)
  2. Volendam (day trip)

Volendam is quite overrun and overdeveloped for tourism. I find Monnickendam more charming and 'real', or Medemblik or Enkhuizen. Enkhuizen also has a wonderful open air Zuiderzee Museum which has live actors enacting professions of the old days such as sailmaking, rope making, teaching in the little school where you can also sit in a class and learn to write with an old fashioned ink pen, and get scolded if you make spots. :-)

Then again, you might be interested to know that in spring and summer a special public bus connects Zaanse Schans and Volendam and Marken. Normally those two areas outside Amsterdam are not so well-connected but in tourist season they run special buses that make it easy to combine these tourist highlights.

  1. Maastricht 2 days ( can we do black forest in Germany from here by train?)

Nice idea. You can combine it with a daytrip to Aachen in Germany which has an impressive cathedral. I think Black Forest is way too far. Visit some caves near Maastricht, and the town itself. You will already lose half a day to traveling as it is so you won't have much time in those '2 days'.

  1. Orchideeen Hoeve and Giethoorn 3 days

Giethoorn is tiny. 1 day is plenty. I don't know the Orchideeën Hoeve. That region of the Netherlands is great for cycling in the countryside. If you're interested in that, read more here: https://obertop.wordpress.com/2017/12/19/tips-for-cycling-trips-in-the-netherlands/
You may want to stay overnight in a medieval hansa town, like Zwolle or Hattem or Kampen. There are some interesting historical buildings and leftover parts of city walls to see there, and many cute cafes and shops. And a lot less touristy / overrun than Giethoorn.

  1. back to Amsterdam 1 day ( take night flight back to Hyderabad)
Are there any other places to be included ?
We wish to do the Black forest region of Germany if possible to combine with this trip.

In that case you need to drop a few places in the Netherlands, and take about 4-5 days to go to Germany. And also fly home from Munich or Frankfurt for example, instead of traveling back to Amsterdam.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to your suggestions.
Thank you,
Seetha

I hope it helps! It would also help if you responded to some of the things people said.

Hi! I'll be in Greece in April then depart from Mykonos to Austria on May 1st. My plane will land in Vienna at 12:30 AM so technically it would be May 2. However I made the mistake of booking irresponsibly because I saw the Mykonos to Vienna flight at just 18 euros lol how sad.. now I've realized that I can't do the two cities in just a short amount of time so I had to let one go.

Tried my best to reroute the flight to Prague or find an affordable, direct or with layover but not too long travel time from either Mykonos/Athens but I really can't find anything that's not expensive or that takes less than 8 hours.. I guess I have no choice but to hop on my flight to Vienna then proceed directly to Prague. I need some help on what's the more reasonable thing to do hope you can help me out these are my options :)

Option #1

I was hoping to just hop on a bus straight from Vienna airport. The earliest Flixbus leave Vienna at 3:00 AM or 4:30 AM and it costs about 14 euros last 4-5 hours if ever I go with this one I plan to just book my accommodation in Prague May 1-4 so when I get to Prague in the morning I can rest before I head out and not go full zombie mode while waiting for check in time

or

Option #2

Just stay in Vienna and book a cheap accommodation have a rest and sleep until daylight have lunch at a cute cafe and leave after lunch for Prague via train so I arrive just about time for May 2-4 check in time

Prices are quite similar so not an issue, just cant decide what's the better option here :( As for long haul buses I rode the Flixbux 5 AM from Paris to Brussels to Amsterdam for 8 hours last year and it found it okay, I just slept the whole ride but would still like to ask what do you guys think? Also for bus travel for females at this time/route would there be any safety concerns? Or none at all? :)

Thank you in advance!

Hi so far this is what I've decided on :)

24 Apr - Athens
25 Apr - Athens
26 Apr - Athens - Santorini
27 Apr - Santorini
28 Apr - Santorini
29 Apr - Santorini - Mykonos
30 Apr - Mykonos
01 May - Mykonos - Vienna then head straight to Prague
02 May - Prague
03 May - Prague
04 May - Prague - Istanbul
05 May - Istanbul
06 May - Istanbul
07 May - Istanbul
08 May - In transit to Philippines

Tried my best to reroute my already booked Mykonos-Vienna flight or find an affordable, direct or with layover but not too long travel time to Prague from Mykonos/Athens but I can't find anything that's not expensive or that takes less than 8 hours.. so I guess I have no choice but to hop on my flight to Vienna then proceed directly to Prague

My flight arrives at Vienna at 12:30 so technically that would be may May 2 already I can't decide what to do next after this but these are my options:

Everyone's really been raving about Istanbul itself and it really looks like a pretty beautiful city so I'm choosing Istanbul over Cappadocia and Pammukkale maybe I can just return next time for Cappadocia and Pamukkale then hop on a plane to Cairo lol! :)

If you are here 27 April please be aware that is King's day. Street parties and flea markets in town centers, and in Amsterdam it will be crowded with people from outside Amsterdam.

I forgot:
Leiden is a much better base for the Keukenhof than Amsterdam. It has a direct bus connection, while from Amsterdam you first have to go to Schiphol airport to catch the Keukenhof Express.

Why are you going to Amsterdam if you don't want to see or do anything there?

Choose another base for some of your suggested day trips. Although the Netherlands is a small country, it is still 2 hrs from Amsterdam to Kinderdijk. Stay in Delft or Dordrecht (in season you have the direct river ferry Waterbus from Dordrecht to Kinderdijk). Historical cities without the tourist crowds of Amsterdam and considerable cheaper as well.
In season Volendam will be unpleasantly crowded with coach parties brought in from Amsterdam. It is much nicer to have a combined day trip to historical Weesp and Naarden, along the same railway line from Amsterdam.
What are you expecting from 3 nights in Giethoorn? It is a small village, the main attraction of which is boating along the waterways. In season it can be uncomfortably packed with tourists all doing the same thing. Better stay in a nearby historical city like Deventer or Zutphen, and do some relaxed day trips and enjoy a total change of scenery.
On the way back you can also stay in Leiden. As close to Schiphol airport as Amsterdam and a lively historical city.
Get yourself an OV Chipkaart, which works nationwide on all forms of public transport.
Get yourself acquainted with the public transport planner 9292.nl, which gives real time information on all trains, buses, trams, metro and even some river ferries.
