Hi, will you do any trekking? (eg: Inca trail, W trek Patagonia?) if so then yes weather is important and you need to plan for the best times and avoid obvious bad times (eg: Feb when Inca trail is closed) and plan these activities well in advance. Also Patagonia is the most expensive part of South America so planning when to visit there if on a budget is important. If not trekking then I'd say don't worry about the weather as it's so diverse in South America even within countries themselves…

Hi Elisabeth, Perhaps you are referring to Jomsom which is a small village that you can fly into on the Annapurna Circuit. I've done many treks in Nepal and I've never heard of the Johnson Trek. Most treks in Nepal, especially for a first time trek, you can so as a self guided trek. On the Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp, Langtang, and others the trail is pretty obvious. Many trekkers do these treks without a guide. There are a few treks in restricted areas where a guide is required -…

I'd like to travel from Porto to Pocinho (Vila Nova de Foz Coa) along the Douro by train, then take the boat on the Douro to Salamanca in Spain. However, many of the boat tours on offer appear to go no further than Barca d'Alva. Are there any (affordable) options to go to Salamanca by boat from Pocinho or thereabouts? Many thanks!

I have not rented a car in Colombia but you can take a bus from Salento to Armenia. Coomotor has buses from Armenia to Neiva (7-8 hours). In Neiva we had to search for a bit to find the transport to Villavieja (on a corner outside). The driver offered to take us all the way to our hotel in the desert for 15,000 COP. It took 1.5 hours. I recommend staying in the desert.

How long do you have and where will you be going after Tatacoa? I liked the desert but I don't think I would go all that way…

Guides

The decision to take a guide or porter in the free areas will depend on what kind of person you are, your past experiences at hiking in your own countries, level of risk you imagine is going to actually occur in reality, personal confidence, independence, fitness, basic sense of direction with half an eye closed and sense of adventure etc. you may have all of that and still choose to take guide and porter. There is nothing major wrong either way. The guidebooks and online chats will explain pros…

I haven't been to Easter Island, so I can't offer advice.

As for the rest, it seems you have 3 weeks and you're willing to go almost anywhere in the southern half of South America? You'll have to choose.

Sticking with the first question, starting with Uyuni, you can do a 3 day jeep tour to see the Salar de Uyuni and a lot of high altitude lagunas, and that will leave you in San Pedro de Atacama at the end, in Chile. San Pedro is worth a couple of days at least, because there are things to see…

I did AC for my 4th time in Jan - Feb 2016, and there were no rickety bridges - I can't remember the last time on the main trekking trails that I crossed that type of bridge.

Perhaps look at doing Langtang valley trek in the time you have available - it gives you an experience of being in the mountains, as opposed to looking at them from a distance.

I have only trekked once in Nepal in Oct - that was back in 2005, when the civil war was still running, which kept the number of trekkers down…

Dear travelers,

I am on a gap backpacking travel in Myanmar, but I am planning to go to Africa before my gap ends in the end of February.

I would like to ask for advice as for which country/countries are best suitable for mid-level budget backpacking (40-50 eur/day) in this period. I am into nature, trekking, of course would like to spot wildlife and I am also an avid snorkeler/diver. I hate package tours but of course I am prepared some activities have to be done on a package on Africa.

From…
