We are likely to be travelling at the end of September and want to double-check that they still run during that season.

Google the address of Immigration in Bangkok. The procedure is the same for all countries who are entitled to a visa exemption. Form, copies of passport-- main pages and Arrival stamp, photo, 1900 baht.
You could go to any bordering country but maybe stay a bit longer than a day to prove you are a genuine tourist.
