Hello,
We are planning a trip to Argentina. We are pretty flexible in terms of when to visit but we are a bit limited on time. We'd like to spend 2 weeks there and see the most of the country.

For us, the places we must visit are Buenos Aires, the Iguazu falls and El Calafate.

I'd also love to visit Salta, Mendoza, Tierra de Fuego and Puerto Madryn.

Any suggestions??? Is this possible in 2 weeks time? Many thanks!!
Ioanna

Welcome to the forum, Oscar from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Yes, you better pay a visit (or 5) to Cuba before you decide to move there.

As a foreigner, you will not be able to buy property or access FREE health care in Cuba or be employed legally. You better have some dollars because Cuba is not particularly cheap for a non-Cuban.

I don't know what else to say.

The circuit between Torres del Paine and El Calafate, also to El Chalten is easily done using bus transport, changing buses in Puerto Natales, Chile. But the rest of it makes no sense by bus. El Chalten to El Bolson would take more than 20 hours on a bus. Bariloche to Buenos Aires would take almost 24 hours riding the bus. Most travelers would fly into and out of Bariloche.

If going all the way to Ushuaia, I advise spending at least 3 days there. Leaving Ushuaia I'd want to stay overnight in Punta Arenas, instead of trying to make the extremely long bus trip to Puerto Natales (launching town for Torres del Paine) in one day.

We would really appreciate any recommendations regarding cycle friendly places to stay, particularly in Cologne and Salzburg where I imagine security might be a more pressing issue than in the smaller places we'll be visiting.

I don't think bike security is a big issue other than in the bigger cities, but then, better safe than sorry, bicycles certainly get stolen and peace of mind is also worth something. On general booking sites I tend to look at the photo's to get a clue about the setting and parking info which can offer hints on what is available. Also mentions of bicycle rental can be a hint that they have bicycle parking space.

Further Germany has plenty hotels aiming at bicycle tourism. Google fahrrad hotel + location to find them. There are some accumulators dedicated to bike friendly hotels, but the ones I know are not particularly user friendly with the exception of www.bettundbike.de/en/ that does an acceptable job (for hotels and camping) though their app likes to crash on my phone. The app has only a German interface but it's simple enough so that shouldn't be a problem.

Is there a possibility to book long distance train tickets from overseas? Neither seat61.com nor Spanish websites in Argentina give a hint.
We want to book sleeper tickets (camarote) from Buenos Aires (Retiro) to Tucuman in advance and only see the possibility of buying the ticket in person on arrival.
Due to very high demand and only twice weekly trains this is not a great option. Registration on the railway website for online purchases does not work either.
I would be happy to learn how we can manage this problem. Thanks a lot!

The CNN town hall with Cooper, Gupta, and Gates aired on the west coast shortly after you posted about it on TT. After watching this on the television, I found it online here (without commercial interruptions):
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/26/app-news-section/full-coronavirus-town-hall-march-26-2020-app/index.html
At 21 minutes into Part 4, Gates states that until we solve this on a global basis, travel to and from some countries will need to be restricted. Gates feels a vaccine is possible in 12 to 18 months.

Gates shares the same opinion espoused by some of the researchers looking into the origin of the virus. That is, the most likely source is from bats through an intermediary animal in the wild animal markets of China.

Not touched upon in this CNN town hall, but reported elsewhere, is that while people who recover from Covid 19 have some immunity to the virus, it is not yet known how long that immunity will last. It could be short or long term.

Hiya, I book my accomodation through Travely, it's a bit like booking.com but it seems to have slightly better rates; you can find hotels/apart-hotels, and people renting privately like Air BnB. They have an app for iPhone and Android; you can chat to guests in that area to ask what the venue is like sometimes too!

Hi travellers!

I'm planning a trip to Argentina, but this time I'll be in a rush: I want to spend just one night in Jujuy/Tilcara only to do a trekking with llamas (caravana de llamas. )

1) How can I make the most out of my time?

  • Overnight: do you suggest a place to sleep? (I'll be on honeymoon!)

  • Flight: I can still decide if take a plane from Iguazù or Buenos Aires; It seems that airport Gdor. Horacio Guzmán is close to Tilcara, but there isn't any transport. Are taxi trustworthy?

2) What about safety?

I've heard both by locals and tourists that Buenos Aires is plenty of pickpocketers and It could be dangerous. Is the same for this area?
Thank you indeed,
Valeria

Hello! My husband and I are setting off next year to travel South America for a year as digital Nomads. The plan is to spend about a month or so in each place in airbnb. I would love your thoughts on these cities and if you think they would be a good fit for us for a month based on the qualifications we're looking for:

*Reliable internet
*Relative Safety
+Enough to do in the city/surrounding area to keep us engaged for a month or so (note- we tend to enjoy bigger cities, but wouldn't be opposed to smaller places. We like hiking, exploring the city and good food, but aren't too into historical landmarks, ruins or churches).

The places we're considering as a home base are:

Medellín, Colombia
Bogota, Colombia
Quito, Ecuador
Cuenca, Ecuador
Lima, Peru
Arequipa, Peru
Santiago, Chile
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Should we reconsider any of these places (especially Peru and Ecuador)? Do you have additional suggestions for us to look into?

Thank you!
