Hello!

Our itinerary is in need of some well travelled help please!

My partner and I (early 30's) have 8 weeks to explore some parts of South America from early September this year. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of more time so looking to make the most of what we do have.

We are looking to do a mix of cities and outdoor exploring, not interested in partying or drinking. Planning to travel by bus and use overnight buses where practical but happy to look at some flights to manage our itinerary. Our budget is a little flexible - a little more than backpacker on a shoestring is ok.

We will fly into Lima and have our inca trail booked a week later. Then my partner wants to see Buenos Aires & Iguazu Falls and I would like to see Patagonia, particularly Puerto Natales and TDP for W trek. Not exactly close... so we have come up some rough itinerary ideas below. We would really appreciate any feedback as to how ambitious this will be, what could be cut out or improved on or if we really need to reconsider...

Peru ?2 weeks
Cusco including inca trail/MP
Arequipa + Colca Canyon

Travel through Bolivia to Argentina ?1-2weeks
Lake Titicaca
La Paz
Salar de Uyuni tour

Explore Salta and North West Argentina ?1-2weeks

Fly Salta to Iguazu
Iguazu falls x 1 night
Overnight bus to Buenos Aires
Explore Buenos Aires

Patagonia ?2 weeks
Fly Buenos Aires to El Calafate
El Chalten
Puerto Natales and TDP for W trek

Fly Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas to Santiago to depart

How early would this internal flights need to be book to secure a somewhat reasonable price?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Adding Colombia to your itinerary would make it all more expensive (flight tickets), even if the country itself is less expensive than Brazil. Besides, the beaches there can't compare to the Brazilian ones, from the south to the north (Natal).
If you want to add another country, consider Uruguay where there are nice beaches too. For more cultural experience you could also add Buenos Aires. It's an easy ferry trip from Uruguay.

Hi Guys ! I'm traveling solo to SA next month-Jan 2019. As I'm traveling on a short notice, any suggestions to my rough itinerary are more than welcomed.

Also,If you could suggest better routes and places to save up some time, that would be great.

Really more than happy to incorporate anything that I shouldn't miss out on. Also, is it safe to travel to the places mentioned in itinerary ?
I have recently bought a MacBook and iPhone, wasn't sure if I should carry MacBook along but it would be difficult to survive for three months without it.Was thinking to get an insurance for iPhone as I would need it for the pics ;)

Any recommendations welcome.

Hi,

I'm going to be in Buenos Aires for 3 weeks in February, 2018. I'm told that the local currency is weak and so I should take US dollars - is that good advice?

If it is, will shops accept dollars or will I have to exchange the dollars for pesos in Buenos Aires?

I'll be a first time visitor so if anyone has any tips - dos and don'ts - I'd appreciate hearing them. Many Thanks.

Shaun.

What is the best route to do to get to Salta from BA?

I suggest Buenos Aires - Rosario - Córdoba - Nonogasta (La Rioja) - Hualfín (Catamarca) - Tucumán - Cafayate - Cachi - Salta.

This takes you via Rosario and Córdoba, which are well worth visiting, then northwest to join Ruta 40 (one of the world’s great drives). You then stay on Ruta 40 all the way to Payogasta, north of Cachi, before heading off through the Parque Nacional los Cardones to Salta. I have suggested a detour on the way to Cafayate to visit Tucumán, then returning to Ruta 40. This is around 2500 Km and would take about a week. You could actually stay on Ruta 40 to San Antonio de los Cobres before heading east to Salta, or even to Susques, then to Salta via the Salinas, Humahuaca, and Jujuy, although this obviously depends on the time you have.

If you don't have the time needed to go via Nonogasta / Hualfín you could shorten the route by going Buenos Aires - Rosario - Córdoba - Catamarca - Tucumán - Cafayate - Cachi - Salta.

South America is the only continent I am yet to visit and I plan to change that in the coming 18 months! I’ve reckon a cruise seems like good way to tick off a decent number of destinations in this region in one trip as I want to experience both urban and remote destinations.

I have a couple of places in mind that I’ve heard are great and want to visit, however I’m not that familiar with South America in general so it would be great to hear from people which destinations are considered “must visit”?

Definitely also interested to hear which destinations are overrated. The destinations that I’m currently most interested in are Buenos Aires and the Chilean Fjords. The cruise I’m looking at at the moment

Look forward to any recommendations to research :)

Hey all!

So, for my father's 80th, he has brought my mom and I to a cruise in Brazil. I am on it now...(this is how much I plan in advanced...).

Would love any must sees in the following areas:
Parati, Brazil
Sao Paulo (Santos), Brazil
Porto Bello, Brazil
Cruise
Rio Grande, Brazil
Punta del Este, Uruguay
Montevideo, Uruguay
Buenos Aires (we'll have three days here...before we return to the States. I can't wait to see that big bookstore!)

I love art, music and culturally interesting things. I'm not one for a lot of beaches and nature stuff - (I don't have the yellow fever vaccine, and am a bit nervous about going anywhere without it.)

I thought I'd find some interesting travelers here, but pretty much everyone is over 70 years of age. I'm not kidding. My father is not interested in seeing most things on the cruise's planned itineraries, and my mom, who's 76, can walk quite a bit, but her feet hurt. So too much intense walking isn't doable.

I do not love cruises, I think they're a bit weird - but I accepted and am now seeing some beautiful waters, and trying to figure out how to make the most of the time off-ship, seeing anything authentic at all.

Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated. It's clear all the cruise itineraries are just tourist traps.

thanks so much,

I would fly from Bariloche to Buenos Aires. Then fly BA to Iguazu, and fly Iguazu to Mendoza, then bus from Mendoza to Santiago in Chile. It's a more logical route, and there's no reason to include Cordoba unless you've got a specific reason to go there.

Also, the bus trip between Bariloche and Mendoza would be crazy long, maybe 16+ hours. And you don't need 4 nights in Iguazu. 2 nights/2 days will get you through both sides of the falls, with no problems. But you can't go through this part of SA without including Iguazu.

Going north through Chile and heading for Bolivia, Salta and that area of Argentina is a detour, sort of out of the way. But you can do it if you want to.

You could book a multi-city ticket on something like Kayak rather than the pass, particularly if all the flights are operated by one airline. Last year, I flew La Paz (- Lima) - Santiago - Easter Island - Santiago - Montevideo + Buenos Aires - Puerto Iguazu for about 700GBP, which, considering Santiago - Easter Island - Santiago being about 400-500GBP alone, it can work out much cheaper.

Hi. Thanks for all the advice. I didn't realise about the seasons in Bolivia so that's really useful information. Is there much to visit in northern Chile? I'm concerned about overlanding through Argentina from Buenos Aires as the country is massive and I can foresee a lot of long overnight journeys.
