Hello My Fellow Backpackers,
I'm planning a trip to Chile and Argentina for 3 weeks (Dec 15th) and already crying I don't have enough time to see such a gorgeous place! I've read blogs and done my research but would cherish some help. Here is my Itinerary and mainly I'm not sure how to add Mendoza. It would be a shame to leave it out, as my favourite wine in all the world is born here. Solo, Experienced Female Traveller, Backpacker 34 from Canada. Comfortable hiking but also its my vacation. Flights comes in and leaves from Santiago (also hoping the riots don't complicate things too much). Here is the first draft:

Santiago (1 day, 2 nights)
Valaparaiso (2 days, 2 nights, bus back to Santiago
Santiago Flight to Calama
San Pedro to Atacama (2 days, 3 nights)
Day bus 10.5 hrs to Salta
Salta (and surrounding areas for day trips ruins, wineries) 2 days, 3 nights
Fly Salta to Buenos Aires (BA 2 days, 3 nights)
Buenos Aires (BA 2 days, 3 nights)
Fly to El Calafate and 3 hr bus to El Chalten (I day to travel).
El Chaten and surrounding area (Mount Fitzroy) 3 days 4 nights.
*NOW HELP ME. I have 2.5 days left and need to get back to Santiago and I DIDN'T ADD Mendoza, eekkkk! Should I instead take a night bus (18 hrs) from salta to Mendoza. Then Mendoza to BA or add it to the start?

*Not my first trip to South America, but my high school Spanish is terrible.

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I are planning a three month-trip through South America in 2020 and we are beyond excited. We have figured out two possible periods for our trip, and we're hoping some of you may have advice or considerations for determining which period would be preferable.

Option 1: March - May
Rough itinerary: Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Valparaiso, Mendoza, Atacama desert, Salar de Uyuni, Lake Titicaca, Cusco/Machu Picchu, Puerto Maldonado, Lima

Option 2: October - December
Rough itinerary (same as above just other way around): Lima, Puerto Maldonado, Cusco/Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Salar de Uyuni, Atacama desert, Mendoza, Valparaiso, Bariloche, Buenos Aires, Montevideo

We understand that in Option 2 we will hit more destinations in their high season. Is that a big disadvantage in terms of busyness, prices, availability etc.? Will the weather be pleasant in both options?

We are looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Thank you in advance.

Best,
Charlotte & Steven

Hi guys,

I am planning my trip in Januari 2019 in Argentina. We arrive at Buenos Aires.

Our route will be:

Buenos Aires
Mendoza
Salta

What would be the cheapest way to travel? I found busses take a long time and would be around 50 - 100 USD.
Do you have any recommendations which city's we should visit?

We want to cross the border from Salta to Iquique(chili)

Thanks guys!
Lots of love

Well, I would prefer Quito to La Paz myself. I just think Quito is a much nicer city, with a lot more to offer visitors. But I'm sure there's no way to get a cheap flight from Ecuador to Buenos Aires.

If you choose Bolivia, I'd suggest the language schools in Sucre, not La Paz. Sucre is a somewhat more relaxed small colonial city, and it feels safer than La Paz. Sucre is well known for it's Spanish language schools. Going to Buenos Aires, your goal to reach by bus should be Salta, in the NW corner of Argentina. From Salta you can book a cheap flight to BA. On the way south through Bolivia, you can include a jeep tour of the Uyuni salt flats.

From 1th of March I will travel by backpack through Argentina. What would be the best planning according the weather and visiting Torres del Paine?

On the overview I guess to start in BA and head south by bus. What do you think?

Buenos Aires

Puerto Madryn
Ushuaia
Puerto natales
El Calafate
Torres del paine
Bariloche
Santiago
Mendoza
San pedro de atacama
-> Bolivia
-> Peru
-> Rio de Janeiro - cateratas de iguaz

Me and my friends are looking to travel around South America this summer but are a bit short on time. How long would you allow to fly into Rio / Buenos Aires before travelling to Uyuni salt flats, Vinicuna and Machu Picchu? This is just a rough outline of what we might do but have no idea on how long that will take and if we can do more or not.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
Does anyone have any good AirBNB recommendations for January in Buenos Aires, Salta, and Iguazu? I will be traveling in January and just wanted to explore it as an option.
Thanks in advance!

A good 2 month itinerary might start in Lima, then go Paracas- Huacachina- Nazca- Arequipa- Colca canyon- Cusco- Machu Picchu/ Sacred Valley- Lake Titicaca in Peru.

Then in Bolivia: Copacabana on Lake Titicaca- La Paz- Sucre- Potosi- Uyuni salt flats- to finish in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. Then bus from San Pedro to Salta, Argentina, spend some days exploring the NW corner of Argentina, and at the end of trip, fly to Buenos Aires to spend some time there before flying back to Europe.

These are all fairly popular stops for tourists, but you can change it around to include other stops not so touristy. In general Buenos Aires is a much more interesting city than Santiago, Chile.

Thanks trent84 and step. I am thinking that I am doing the Argentina circuit opposite than most I am starting in Buenos Aires to Iguazu to Salta to Cordoba then Mendoza, Bariloche, El Chalten, El Calafate then normally I should be going to Puerto Natales (is it worth visiting and how many days?) then Punta Arenas then Torres del Paine. These last 3 areas is where I am not sure if I should visit or just go to Ushuaia then back to Buenos Aires then over to Chile.

From both of your comments I should probably skip Punta Arenas. Is it still worth doing some day treks in Torres del Paine?
