People do that direction all the time. But in my eyes, your probably best to not cross over to Santiago, but instead make your way north via Cordoba, Salta and then into Chile to visit San Pedro de Atacama and then move north to Bolivia etc.

Can you go all the way to Colombia in 3 months. Sure. Its possible.

Will it be enjoyable trying to cram in those countries in 3 months - probably not.

Its usually suggested that you probably need roughly 1 month for each country in South America. Some countries require more due to the vast size.

3 months is a fair chunk of time. I'd say fly into either Santiago or Buenos Aires and then slowly work your way up.

A bus ticket may not satisfy your airline. On the day before your flight to Argentina, try booking an American airlines flight out of Buenos Aires. You can get a complimentary 24 hour hold on the reservation without paying.

it is too much for 3 weeks, so you're right. The way you want to do Buenos Aires, it sounds like Buenos Aires and Iguazzu will use up most of your first week.

If you want to finish in Peru, at the very least you'll need to leave Santiago out, or forget about visiting the Amazon basin.

Hi, I plan to be in Montevideo soon and wish to spend a day or two in Buenos Aires as well. What are my options for travelling there?

Thanks,

Thank you for the information. I am planning to get a bus from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn. And then a bus
or buses from Puerto Madryn to Ushuaia. I know that the bus needs to be changed at Rio Gallegos. Or so I've been told. Then I plan to fly back from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires directly. I have plenty time for the journey as I will take 1 month in Argentina.

Hi all!
I planning to backpack around Peru, boliva and Chile for 2 months (feb-march) next year. It has been a big dream of mine and decided I need to get out of my comfort zone and do this as my first solo trip. I want to see much of these countries as possible and the biggest thing I want to do is the machu Picchu trek.

I would appreciate any help/suggestions where I should start my trip from, main sights too see and any recommendations for reputable tour company for my trek? I'm flying from London so the easiest cities to get to would be Lima... would also consider Buenos Aires as many blogs have mentioned this as there starting/end point.

I've been reading alot of blogs...but still don't know where to start.

Many thanks
Sonia

Almost everyone does both countries in Patagonia. Either you fly into Punta Arenas, Chile first from Santiago, or from Buenos Aires you fly to El Calafate or to Ushuaia first. Typically tourists cross the border between the 2 countries 1- 2 or 3 times while exploring.

I'm curious if you already visited Santiago/Valparaiso, and what did you think?

Buenos Aires is going to be very similar on numerous levels. MexDF is probably going to be less expensive, have more options, but also comes with more challenges.

Those are nutshell impressions as a fluent traveler. I would likely have very different impressions if I visited from the point of looking to relocate and had minimal Spanish.

The Ozarks and Buffalo National River area keep me occupied while home.

Your help, suggestions... are most welcome in helping me plan my next solo travel to Argentina.
My flights from Canada to Buenos Aires are booked. I will be arriving in Buenos Aires on December 12 and leaving on February 20 back to Canada. This gives me a couple of months to discover Argentina. I was hoping to discover Chile as well but I don't want to be overly rushed so I am thinking of visiting mostly Argentina. I do have a flight booked to Easter Island from Feb. 7 to Feb. 14. I am not sure how many flights I should be taking or how many buses. I don't want to miss some of Argentina's magical landscapes by flying instead of taking a bus. Would anyone recommend which legs should be done by flying and which ones by bus. The following is a very rough schedule of the trip I am planning.

Dec. 12 to 17 - Buenos Aires
Dec. 17 to 20 - Iguazu falls
Dec. 20 to 22 - Salta
Dec. 22 to 24 - Cordoba
Dec. 24 to 29 - Mendoza
Dec. 29 to Jan 4 - Bariloche
Jan. 4 to Jan 8 - El Chalten
Jan. 8 - 10 El Calafate
Jan 10 - 13 - parque National Torres del Paine.
Jan. 14 - 20 - Ushuaia

The rest is still to be determined. Wondering if this is a good way to start or if I need to do the reverse and start by doing to Ushuaia. I also need to plan the best circuit to do to end up in Santiago where I have my flight to Easter island.

Any suggestions on circuit and length of stays at each place. Any other areas that are "not to be missed"?

Thanks so much for any feedback.

I’m flying to Buenos Aires on June 4 with my cousin to meet my other cousin who is studying abroad there. I will arrive the morning of the 5th and leave the evening of the 12th to head back to New York. I know it will be late fall / early winter but what are some realistic 3 day trips we could take from BA? I’ve never been to South America and I know I’m there for a very short period but would love to see another place as well. We were throwing around the idea of going somewhere in Northern Patagonia or the desert.
