Most people obtain Lao kip by making withdrawals from ATM bank locations, which gives you the best available exchange rate.

If you go to Sam Neua + Vieng Xai first from Luang Prabang, you can connect from Sam Neua via Phonosavan to Vientiene, without revisiting Luang Prabang. The way you listed the places includes 2 stops in LP.

And if going all the way to Pakse, you should at least include a day trip to see the Champasak ruins, one of the very best Laos places. I'd want 2-3 nights in the 4000 islands region too, one of the best Lao places for relaxation.

Hey all!

Thank you so much for your feedback, it's been super helpful in our planning process. We just booked our plane tickets there! We'll be headed to Bali on 10/17/18 and are planning on having a much more open ended/flexible itinerary based on weather and how much we enjoy any given place. We have some cities that we're definitely interested and a general flow that we plan on following. Our general outline is as follows:

US --> Indonesia (10/17)
-Bali
-Jakarta
Singapore
Malaysia (depending on time/weather)
-Penang
-Malacca
Bangkok
Northern Thailand
-Chiang Mai
-Chiang Rai
-Pai
Laos
-Luang Prabang (Slow boat)
Northern Vietnam
-Hanoi
-Ha Long Bay
Central Vietnam (super weather dependent)
-Hue
-Da Nang
-Hoi An
Southern Vietnam
-Ho Chi Minh
-Mekong Delta
Cambodia
-Phnom Penh
-Phu Quoc
-Siem Reap
Eastern Thai Islands (anywhere else around Bangkok we might be interested in)
-Ko Lan/Ko Phai/Ko Sichang
Bangkok --> US (~12/19)

We were definitely overly worried about dates/plans and have realized that we will have to play a lot of things by ear. Booking our tickets there was a big step for us and we can't wait to get started on our trip!

If you are going to SEA anyway why don't you just do one of the 4 week courses in Thailand. They
re available all over the place but mainly in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Doing a course there will give yu classroom experience that you won't get online.

I think going from Nong Khiew to Nan may be harder than it looks.
Option 1: You could return to LP and try to take the Intl. Bus from LP to Nan but that bus isn’t operating every day and the last time I asked they told me I had to wait 5 days for the next bus. You can ask when you first go to LP at the Naluang Minibus Station across the street from the Southern Bus Station.
Option 2: Another way would be to go from Nong Khiew to Oudom Xay and change bus there to go to the border at Muang Ngeun via Pak Beng. At Muang Ngeun you’d have to take a tuk tuk out to the border and walk about 1 km between the immigration checkpoints and hope to find a mini bus on the Thai side going to Nan the same day. But these only go until about 14:00 each day so you need to cross the border before noon. Best would be to stay overnight at Muang Ngeun at one of the 3 or 4 guest houses there.
Option 3: Forget about Nan and cross into Thailand at Huay Xay / Chiang Khong either by Mekong boat from LP to Huay Xay or bus from Nong Khiew to Huay Xay with a suggested stop in Luang Namtha on the way.

Could some kind person tell me where I could rent a motorcycle/scooter in Chiang Dao or Fang?
Does anyone know what the facilities are like at Doi Pha Hom Pok for overnight stays? Are there restaurants, or would I need to bring food? Tents to rent?
What is the wildlife/birdlife like at Chiang Dai Wildlife Sancturay and Doi Pha Hom Pok NP?
Thanks.

Well, you could go for a beach week in Phuket or Langkawi, or as above Penang. Those should be good in "End of November, beginning of December". Avoid the Thai east coast islands like Ko Samui, which still could be in monsoon.

we are most interested in the historical types (temples, ruins, architecture, etc.)

So this sounds like Siem Reap might be another ideal place for you, with all of the Angkor ruins. There are higher end hotels with swimming pools there. A really good visit for Angor Wat takes 3 whole days, and there are side trips you can do to Tonle Wat (the biggest lake in Cambodia) and Battambang. But for Battambang, you'd want at least one night overnight there.

The last place is more of a puzzle. Chiang Mai might be a good place, or maybe Luang Prabang in Laos. But there's not enough for a whole week in either place. To make it a week, you have to use buses or private transport to go elswhere nearby. From Chiang Mai, you can make it a week if you join a trekking group to walk in the national park nearby, sleeping in the most basic rustic houses you can imagine. But that usually includes elephant rides, and some people object to that because they don't like to see elephants abused.

What are the best mountain climbing experiences in Thailand?

Not talking about 'rock climbing' here.

I'm looking to climb them to escape the heat, but also to include them on my website (summits.com). I already have Doi Inthanon and Doi Chiang Dao up near Chiang Mai, but these mountains are pretty easy-going. You can even drive most the way up Inthanon. Looking for a proper challenge.

Many thanks,

Pete

I'll spend five days in Thailand in November, flying in and out of Bangkok. Having been to Bangkok, Ko Tao, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai before, where should I spend these days? I like like hiking, biking and snorkeling. Maybe catch a budget flight to one of the islands?

Would anyone know what you would pay for a cheap dormitory room in Bangkok and Chiang Mai nowdays.

I was there 20 years ago but I would assume the prices have changed allot since then.

I will be there in the next from the beginning of July until the end of August. It's just me, and I'm not after anything fancy.

Maybe there is not need to get a dorm room nowdays? Maybe it's a cheap single basic room I'm after.

Any advice on costs?

Thanks

Yes,as above...without any information it is difficult to make suggestions!

I'd agree with a max. of 2 places in that timeframe. It is not too much time just to spend on one place, like Bamgkok,Chiang Mai or an island...
