I've asked in Thailand only to find they were using the same pastes I can get at home. And in 1990, we had bbq chicken at a food stall at some park outside of Chiang Mai. My husband asked the guy about his chilli sauce and lo and behold out came the bottle of commercial chicken dipping sauce. We even bought a couple of bottles off him and carried it home. So that sort of stuff isnt limited to just places that cater to westerners.

Depends on the facility. For medical tourism, Mexico is fine as long as you use first-class hospitals. But I chose to go to Thailand for dentistry tourism. Even if you add the cost of flights and hotel, it's still a fraction of the cost compared to the US. I've used Thantakit Dental that's located in Bangkok for my two dental implants. Then I holidayed in Chiang mai and Phuket afterwards.

I will be backpacking in SE Asia April - July with my friend. We have contacted a farm outside Luang Prabang that we will be working at for a month or two. We will be coming from Thailand and want to have a route that goes further north to see some of the more remote/nature destinations of Thailand and Laos. That being said, is there anything we should be worried about with civil unrest or other things to watch out for on off-the-path nature treks? Areas to avoid?
I tend to err on the side of caution and just want to get first hand advice from others that have been there. Thank you for any and all advice!

Thanks for your reply :)
So based on everything I read online, Sukhothai is 5 days - but then I e-mailed the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and they told me that this year it would be 10 days (16th-25th)...and that the main event is the 22nd (not the 23rd, which is also contrary to what I'd read literally everywhere else). This discrepancy concerned me a bit, but it sounds like you're saying that it may indeed be a different day (i.e. 22nd) in Sukhothai as elsewhere (i.e. maybe 23rd in Bangkok or Chiang Mai). Right?
Also, based on what you said, I guess I should plan to be there for the days leading up to the 22nd for the best experience (i.e. "grandest" events). i.e. 20, 21, 22 (leave on 23). Does that sound right?
Thanks again! :)
In my opinion, you can stay in Thailand for whole trip. Start from Bangkok, go to Sukhothai and move to the North to visit Chaing Mai, Chaing Rai and take flight to Phuket, Krabi, or take the boat to Koh Chang, Koh Yao Noi or Koh Yao Ai. If not, after 15 days in Thailand, come to Vietnam for 15 days. The beginning of October is in the dry season - so if it rains, there won't be too much.
My guess is you somehow got misdirected by someone selling "affiliated" with wat pho as that doesn't sound at all like the program I know..
For the OP, Chiang Mai is full of good schools that you can read reviews on as well... Any massage course (generalizing here) that is done on the islands is probably more interested in your cash than techniques!

I did the route from Muang khua to Dien bien phu last year. The road was pretty good on the Lao side of the border, and had patches of roadworks on the Vietnamese side. There was nothing particularly scary about it. Vang vieng to Luang phabang was far worse The border was dead quiet, just walked through, got the stamp, back on the bus.

Hi!
I'm going to Vietnam for the first time in March (Arriving in Hanoi the 15th at 1:30 PM, leaving from Ho Chi Minh the 29th at 7:15 PM, 14 days). Can't wait! We're a couple, and will probably be going backpacking style.
I'm in the planning phase, and from what I could gather, the main places I'd love to visit are (I've excluded Nha Trang and Mui Ne from the list after reading too much negative things):
- Sapa
- Hanoi
- Halong Bay
- Ninh Binh
- Phong Nha National Park
- Hue (Motorcycle ride on Hai Van pass?)
- Hoi An
- Da Nang
- My Son
- Da Lat
- Ho Chi Minh
Now, I know this is way too much, so I wanted some help to reduce this list. The ones in bold are the ones I wouldn't scrap off the list.
My main hesitations are :
-
Sapa or Ninh Binh ? Or only Phong Nha ?
From what I could read or understand, Sapa is like 6 hours from Hanoi, so 12 hours travel total (the main negative point). The place looks stunning. But I've read that it has become very touristy, and that the place didn't handle that very well. Ninh Binh on the contrary, is "on the path" from Halong Bay to Phong Nha National Park, and looks also stunning. If Phong Nha is pretty similar to Ninh Binh, maybe skip the latter ? I understand Sapa and Ninh Binh are very different from each other, so I'd love your input on this matter. -
Hue, Hai Van Pass, Hoi An and Da Nang (My Son)?
What are the more interesting places ? Is it worth it to do all three, motorcycling on the Hai Van Pass ? What is the best road of the Hai Van Pass (Hue-Hoi An, Hoi An-Da Nang, etc. ) Is it worth it ? From where should I go to My Son ? -
Da Lat and/or South
I have a lot of planned things in the north and center, but only Ho Chi Minh in the south. Is Da Lat worth going ? What other south places should I check ?
At the moment, I have a file like this to help me plan the travel.
I'm scared of doing too much, rushing things and ruining the experience. But also to stay too many days in a location that doesn't need it.
I'd love your opinion on this ! Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am planning a 2,5 month trip around SEA and we are at the moment of planning itinerary that would be more recreational/beach focused, but also we want to focus on finding/seeing/interacting with animals for our kids (5 and 8 year old).
I know this is a broad topic, but we are really now broadly looking around for places to visit: before visiting SEA, we will be in Costa Rica where we plan to visit Jaguar rescue center, sloth sanctuaries, but also "on the way to SEA" visit Hawaii and sea seahorse/octopus farm in Big Island. We also have Sepilok in Borneo for Orangutans.
Are there any other places you would recommend to visit? I know Elephant farm near Chiang Mai, apparently there are various snake farms/centers (Bali has one apparently) and I read somewhere about whale sharks in Cebu (although this is overall a question mark).
I know there are some ethical issues at some of the places, so if there is a possibility to visit the ones that do not mistreat the animals that would be great and I would be super super thankful if this topic does not become mainly about animal abuse, but rather with helpful tips :) Thanks!!!
