@kevanrosenberg

a flight to India (Mumbai) on the 11th this month.

Monsoon is a bit of dampener, in that case.

great off the beaten path places or things to do anywhere in India.

Between the Turks, the Mughals, the Brits, the Dutch, the Portugese, and one billion Indians, there isn't much that isn't beaten.

My budget and time are both very flexible.

How long is your visa for?

Hi everyone:

Looking to do some day and multi-day hikes. I am not sure what would be my best bet that time of year. I know there is the Lost City hike - other ideas? I would join a group if need be but looking for some off-the-beaten path suggestions. Flying into Medellin and out of Bogota. Have 13 nights total. Thank you in advance. LJL

1.) Aside from the usual Santorini, Mykonos, what are the other Greek islands you would suggest to a first time Greece visitor? I've heard Paros and Rhodes. I'm also considering Milos?

Me I wouldn't even suggest the usual Santorini and Mykonos, so this is a very personal call you see : ) There are around 200+ inhabited islands in Greece and everyone could offer their own favorites and you would be no wiser. A couple of points to help you narrow it down is a) Travel logistics -see 4) below b) How busy you want it to be as for some islands it's very early in the season while for others it's fairly busy c) What you plan to do and see on each place, especially weather-related stuff, usually the southern/eastern you go the warmer the weather d) Budget issues, not only within the islands but also for getting there

2.) I want to make a side trip to another location I've been to Italy last year (Milan, Rome, Venice, Florence) so I'm thinking of Turkey, Cappadocia specifically. Is it a better option? Or I should visit Italy again and visit Positano side? Or do you have any other recommendations near Athens that's worth visiting and exploring?

As others said, you should do nothing. It's up to you. Do remember that Greece has a vast and varied mainland though and it's not only about Athens and the islands. Personally I would be tempted to explore a bit of that too, but that's me and not you.

Maybe not completely up to date, but to get you started to get an idea of ferry links, here is Greece-Turkey connections https://turkeytravelplanner.com/trans/Ship/GreekIslandFerries.html Greece-Italy ferries http://www.greekferries.gr/ There might be some seasonal flights between some of the Greek islands to major Italian towns and/or to Istanbul too, otherwise Athens is the obvious link for flights to international destinations.

https://www.aia.gr/traveler/flight-info/direct-flights/

3.) Also if I do push through with a side trip what's the best way to move? Via plane or train?

That really depends on specifics. In general the term "best" might mean different things to different people and/or under different curcumstances. A side trip where? Best on what terms? Money or conveniance or time-wise or what? Better to do some research and decide for your self after having some specific ideas.
>
> 4.) While in Greece, flying to island to island. Is it better to ride a ferry or get plane tickets?

A major thing not to do while preparing a trip is to assume. It's common but wrong assumption among first time travelers to Greece when they start to plan a trip that everywhere is easily connected to everywhere. They can't be more wrong. Flights between the islands are not common while the ferry system needs some getting used to to see how it works. Very generally speaking, Greek islands are divided in island groups. Most ferry routes run within each island group and from/to Attica and ferries connecting different island groups are limited on specific routes and often only seasonal. It's more complicated than that, but a guidebook or playing around https://www.gtp.gr/RoutesForm.asp?lng=2 could give you a better idea on this. Please do note the time required to travel by sea, as an other wrong assumption is that "hey, A looks so close to B on the map, it mist be a half an hour deal", while in reality it might be a 7 hours ferry ride lol Do note that there are many ferry types too, the faster and smaller in general are more pricey than the larger and slower. Again a very general rule. It's not so terribly complicated as it sounds, but you need to get a handle of how these things work before making firm plans while been over-optimistic and haven't seen the practicalities...

5.) Or should I just ditch the side trip and enjoy the Greek Islands instead?
See replies above. Personal call.

6.) Any off the beaten track/non-touristy gems you'd recommend?
No, because they wouldn't be off the beaten track for too long lol On a more serious note, I feel you are at the very start of planning this trip. Browse this forum a bit and check a couple of guidebooks among other resources to get a better idea of the place(s), because to be honest your post feels mostly as name throwing. It takes some homework but a trip is always more rewarding after making some homework and customise a trip according to your own informed decisions, interests and specifics, rather than on other people's bias (including mine of course).

Do not hesitate to come back with more specific questions some time in the future and Do let us know how it goes

The most reliable shuttle is called Caribbean Shuttle and it is worth the money. You are correct in thinking that there are no over the water places in Puerto Viejo and of course coral and sea life are way more evident than in CR. I stayed at a place that was off the beaten track on a little visited island, Isla Cristobal. The place was partially over the water and was surrounded by live coral which was great for snorkeling. I saw a number of other places as well. Some are fancier than others. I like the ones that have glass sections in the room floor. The is a light under the cabins so you can watch all sorts of things awim by all night long. Have fun and let us know how it was. Although Isla Cristibal is only like a 15 minutes boat ride from Bocas Town, it is a world away. The one thing pretty much all the over the water places have now is the hammocks that hang out over the water and are about a foot above the sea, very relaxing.

the thing about getting off the beaten track is to get away from the places geared up for the tourist

The reason I have unclear info is because I am not in the target market I am more than happy to go off and explore and be the only "white" man in the village and do my own exploration. (I have just returned from 2 months in Tanzania and with the exception of the beginning and end of the trip I saw no other tourists)

The Japanese Alps are good for serious hiking in high altitude mountains. The mountain huts are fully equipped and you could do a multi-day hike carrying very little luggage (basically only cloths and food/drinks for the way between huts). Transportation from Tokyo is easy and you even have convenient overnight buses to some of the more famous hiking spots (such as Kamikochi). So yes, you'd have the time if you don't want much time in Tokyo itself.

There are mountains just outside Tokyo and in principle you could do multi-day hikes staying in small ryokan/minshuku along the way. However this would require a bit of planning and accommodation booking and would be fairly off the beaten track (for foreign tourists).

Alternatively you could do day hikes in places such as Kamakura, Nikko (staying overnight in Nikko), Hakone, Mitake, Takao, Nokogiri, Tanzawa mountains...

Good morning,
We personally found ha long bay over rated. Yes it's beautiful, yes it is interesting but once you've seen it there isn't much else and it is packed with tourists and the only locals you will come in contact with are guides and set up tourist attractions.

We just love the Sapa area once you get out of town. Follow locals and walk to villages or hire a guide who can get you off the beaten track. Two places we found very interesting were Bac Ha and Lau Cai, one has a saturday market the other a sunday market can't remember which is which. While there are tourists there it is very authentic and interesting.

Also Nina Binh has some very interesting sites, temples and lovely country side.
Hope this helps.

So, I've pretty much read the Lonely Planet book cover to cover and thought I had narrowed down where we wanted to stay until I came on here and now I'm questioning everything...

A little about us-- we're an active family of five with kids ages 9, 14 and 16. We love the beach of course, but we also love hiking and off the beaten path spots. The kids are CRAZY about wildlife--as in they have all watched nature shows their entire lives instead of the Disney Channel. So, tops on our list would be seeing wildlife and some stunning natural tropical vistas.

However, it's our first time to Costa Rica and --wait for it-- we're are coming during Easter....! Perhaps it's helped by the fact that we're traveling Tuesday the 16th to Tuesday the 23rd? Or, perhaps not? I know that is far from an ideal time to visit, but we are tied to school schedules at this life stage :(

So, we only have a week. And the first day, the 16th ,will be taken up with getting in (our flight will arrive noonish and then driving out to wherever we decide to begin our trip) and, then, we figure we will have to drive back to San Jose the night before our flight out (on the 23rd, early morning), so that means we're driving the 22nd too. Which leaves us with just the 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 as real, full sightseeing days.

We can fly into either LIberia or San Jose, though we do save a bit flying into SJO. We plan to rent a 4WD to get around and rent an AirBnB. Because we have spent so much time in the Caribbean and never been to the Pacific, the Pacific side appeals more to us...just because it would be something different for us.The area down around Carillo and Islita sound nice but it seems like we'd have to fly into Liberia for sure and then we'd probably not be able to get over to Arenal & Northern Lowlands--which is the other area which sounded appealing from the guidebook. We've found Air BnBs in each area (one in Islita one in Monterrey in the Arenal area) that sound lovely and pretty far off the beaten path, but I'm just not willing to commit to one or the other. I wish there were a way to do both the beach and the jungle!

Any and all advice welcomed!

Some suggestions:

There are lots of other places which are a bit off the beaten trail and get fewer visitors: the cave temples and Kuala Kangsar in Perak, Buddhist temples in Tumpat (Kelantan), Alor Setar (Kedah), the Sri Menanti palace in Negeri Sembilan, Kenyir lake, the Endau Rompin national park and more.
