#8. Prudish nun complex? Explain more.

Maybe not so much now, but there was a time when it was very common for Western gentleman to 'employ' a female guide. She had local language and a bit of local knowledge. Any extras were usually part of the deal.

Like it or not it was a pretty standard part of the tourist scene in Vn and more so in Thailand. It is understandable and also unfortunate that the OP's question was vague enough to be misinterpreted in this way.

Leigh, seek out local Vietnam travel agencies who can provide a guide with or without a car and driver. We are also from Sydney. With two people it's very cheap to organise a private tour with guide, vehicle, driver, entrance fees, etc. - much cheaper than booking through an Australian agency. But this option works out much cheaper for two people than one, so what you decide to do depends on your budget.

Another option is to travel on a group tour with someone like Intrepid, where you will get to travel with others and you are sure to make friends.

Or you could just do day tours which can be booked when you get there. This is a good option if you want flexibility and some company.

I have travelled both solo (taking the odd day tour) and also with another person on a private tour. Please feel free to message me if you want more info. and ideas.

I have spent over 300 days over the years in VN.
Only guides I have used is on group day trips.
VN is so easy to negotiate. It being mainly a thin strip just point yourself in one direction and keep going.

Now I'm convinced, the prudish nun complex really is a thing.

i cant read anywhere on my post that is asking for a female in particular

Indeed not, but why then specify that you're male.

Apologies if I misjudged your post. We get a steadyish stream of similar ones, with no detail as to what the poster's interests are other than looking for a guide/travel companion.

Vietnam is very easy to travel solo and meet people along the way, but you need to work out what you want to see/do. Travelfish covers it best for beginners.

Well as a first time traveller i thought it may be a good idea to ask for this, i cant read anywhere on my post that is asking for a female in particular Nor looking for any sort of sleezy business, but thank you for assuming I appreciate your valued input and being generalised

You give such little information people have to "read between the lines" to try and guess what you are seeking. e.g. Party vs quiet life, temples vs beach, wildlife vs city, north vs south vs central, hiking vs cycling vs walking vs buses, 5* vs 4* vs 3* vs 2* vs hostels/etc, 1month or 2 months 3 months, $$$ vs $$ vs $, full time paid guide or "volunteer".

So many questions you cannot be surprised when people have to make assumptions and it seems a bit off when you object to their reasonable assumptions (reasonable based on your request). After the likely meaning I kicked myself for not spotting the likely meaning (maybe I'm a bit slow).

If you've decided to go to Vietnam you must have researched it a bit and appreciated how easy it is to travel and what areas you want to visit, etc.
