Hello,
Anyone out there want to suggest the best way to get from the Lao Cai(I thinks thats the name) border in Northern Vietnam to Kunming. I would like to spend the least amount ot the 500km on motorways if that is at all possible.
And while I am thinking of it does anyone know a good cheap place to stay in Kunming?
thanking you,
Will

The road from Lao Cai (Hekou on the Chinese side of the border), is hilly and winding. Hongha on the Vietnamese branch says it passes through forests, I went on the overnight bus an saw nothing.

My wife and I stayed at the Camellia Hotel (the Chinese characters for the hotel read "Mountain Flower" [Hoa Shan]). The 90Yuan rooms were almost as good as the 120Yuan rooms, so take the 90Y ones. The amazing !! breakfast was only 10Y for everything you could eat. Once we discovered that, we never ate breakfast anywhere else. It meant we didn't need lunch either. I think the Camellia is on DongFang Eaast Street. Check in your guidebook. Taxi drivers in Kunming do not speak English.

Friends have stayed at and recommend another hotel round the corner frm the Camellia and up a lane.

Today I crossed the border from Lai Cai to Hekou, and will start cycling Kunmig-Lijiang-Chengdu in two days. Drop me a message if you in the area.
