Hey guys!
I have been cycling in Mexico for 6 months now. As I receive lots of emails regarding the costs of touring over here, I put together this article explaining what I've been spending.

http://www.cyclingelmundo.com/the-numbers-of-mainland-mexico/

The costs are in USD and for one person. Although, I travel with my girlfriend which makes everything a bit cheaper (sharing rooms, cooking together, etc)

I hope you like it. Any feedback is welcome!

Good travels,
Antonio

Good idea but one thought i had on this is that people like to know how much it costs for one night. That is probably a more useful number than an average costs - because that will vary for the people travelling. You might be better at avoiding hostels than other people.

Also with your costs, its good to describe what the money buys you. What sort of quality hostel are we talking about. I don't anything about mexico really but in a place like india there is a vast range in terms of quality so that only the youngest and poorest of travellers would consider staying in the cheapest guesthouses. Even though i always travel on a tight budget, i wouldn't consider the cheapest options there when there is a choice because the cheapest options are too depressing.

Thanks for your thoughts Newslander.

Well, acommodation prices, as you say, can vary a lot. So it's hard to give a price for one night as Mexico is quite diverse. I would say it's expensive in Baja California, ok priced in mainland and very expensive in the Yucatan peninsula. But even within the same region prices can vary a lot, and that's why I prefer to use average together with how many nights did we pay to sleep, we camped or we stayed at hotels/hostels.

Trying to answer to your question, a double room in a basic but clean hostel will go for around 20 USD in Baja, around 15USD in mainland Mexico and around 25USD in the Yucatan. Dorm beds, only found in southern Mexico and Yucatan, go for 7-15 USD.

Cheers,
Antonio
