Storing bike shipping carton at Manchester Airport

Interest forums / On Your Bike

I am flying from US to Manchester UK airport soon to start a 10-day tour of Peak District, Lake District and other locations.
My bike will go as luggage on the same flight nicely snugged in a eBike carton container (www.shipbikes.com).
Matter is I will need the same box to fly back.
Any idea where to store this flat carton box for 10 days or so at Manchester Airport or close by?

A very good question. You could consider some of the techniques mentioned here...

You don't say how you are getting away from airport. Are you are pedalling, or are you staying somewhere near for first/last night, etc?

There will almost certainly be left luggage at the airport, but if it is like Gatwick it will be at least £5 per day, maybe more if the box doesn't fold flat. Try the airport website.

You could try posting here http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewforum.php?f=16 it is the main UK cycling forum and there will be locals who may be able to advise.

Yes, arriving around 8 am, reassembling the bike then pedalling out.
Thank you Simon and Noel for your thoughtful suggestions.
I enjoyed (and I am also considering) the creative solutions described by viventebikes.com

Hi

I probably would not bother with storing the box at the airport. Personally i would use a normal bike box from your local bike shop discard it in M/cr and pick another one up when you leave. There are plenty of bike shops in the Stockport area that will have boxes for you and then take a cheap taxi to the airport. If you get Metro taxis they have standard rates to the airport, prices are on the website. From Cheadle its about £9 including bike in a box. However with a black cab it will be £20 -£25.

Have a look on the web and e-mail any bike shop in Cheadle, Handforth, or Wilmslow to see if they have bike boxes. Try this place first it will be ideal for you and they often have boxes

For a taxi give these guys a call no need to book in advance they will come to the bike shop and pick you up.

Impressive local; knowledge Steve. By chance would you happen top know about Ezerum Turkey? Two of us want to fly out of there next Tuesday. We intend to scout the airport the day before on the off chance there is cardboard we can scrounge. Not much of a plan though.

Never mind the taxi, most if not all trains to Manchester Airport take bikes, or bike boxes. But don't cut it too fine. Give yourself a few hours of leeway.

There are direct train services to Man Airport from the Lake District and Yorkshire on which you can take a bike, boxed or not, without formalities, just in case this might fit your plans. Obviously this doesn't help you if you want to use the same box that you flew out with... there are a lot of cyclists in Manchester and you could probably find someone to store your box if necessary via another website. ctc.org.uk would be a good start where you can find the forum for the main British cycle touring association.
