Hi ewcyna, we really like this idea of cycling to Nong Khiaw. I was researching it a couple of days ago in fact. The Nam Ou River looks really beautiful and I'm glad to hear you say it's a spectacular ride. It looks like about 140km on route 13 - is this the route you would suggest?

Also, since we aren't planning to return to Vientiane, I didn't think a rental would work. We're also thinking we wouldn't get very decent quality bikes if we did that. We're prepared (have saved up) to buy bikes there, and plan to give them to someone in need when we're done.

And I like the idea that you like it:).
Well, from Louang Prabang you continue north by route 13 , then turn right to 1c-very peaceful ride. You reach Nong Khiaw, plan at least one day there and go eating to indian restaurant, stay in hamak or go kayaking. Go to the pier to ask about the boat to Mong Khoua if i remember well-the boats go when they have people but they made one just for me and some locals. The boat ride is so intetesting to stop in by the river villages. Then fromMong Khoua go left to Oudomxay
Also great ride all the time by the river, last 15 km pretty hard. Remember going north from Vientiane you will be going all the time up rivers-more climbing.
Then from Oudomxay if you have spare 3-4 days you can go back to Mekong river to Pakbeng and catch your boat to Thailand.
Avoid route 13 from Pakmong to Oudomxay-was told many times it is a true disaster.
Enjoy!

Also do your homework on towms with guesthouses as you will not probably carry hour gear, do you?
I camped a few times -well I like it but also there were no places to stay nearby.
