I enjoyed reading your piece. However, you make sure to say that your article is protected by copyright, but you use copyrighted photography to accompany it. Not sure it's the best idea. ;-)

Olive, i think that when you put the images together like that its ok. I say that because if there was an issue, the newspaper would not be publishing this picture.
If you use images without permission or licence, it's not. No matter how you put them together. The newspaper might have assumed the images were yours, or you have a right to use them. It all depends how diligent the paper is, and what their rules are. It might be that responsibility remains yours, and if anybody contacts the paper about the infringement, they will send them directly to you.
Just trying to help.

For some reason i thought if they were used to make another image it would be fine. Anyway i shall take it down and email the editor to tell him not to use it. But it would be nice to read something explicit about reusing postcards in this way. I haven't been able to find anything.
Look at it this way: the postcard company licenced (hopefully) a photo/s to print them on a postcard, that the only use they paid for. They don't own the photo, the copyright is still with the photographer who got paid (hopefully) for that use only. Photo theft from internet is rampant these days, but that doesn't make it right, or legal. You can always look up images on Flickr, let's say, and ask if the photographer is ok with you using the image. Some will be, some won't, and some will want compensation.
Your best bet is to take your own photos next time, then you don't need to worry about it.

I made a deliberate decision not to take my camera on this trip and it was only when the editor said could i give him a picture did i realise the only pictures i had were a bunch of postcards. So i took a picture of my postcard collection.
I'm sicking of lugging my camera about. But generally i should know about copyright with photos since photography is my subject. I just somehow thought a montage would be different. Never mind. I'm over it.
