Hello all
If anyone's looking for information or advice on cycling in Portugal - touring or just the odd day ride - take a look at Pedal Portugal.
There's everything from route maps to campsite lists and advice on maps, road numbering etc.
Also always looking for feedback from other riders, so if you've got any tips or recommendations that you can share then please let me know.
Cheers, Huw

Portuguese maps aren't very good. The best printed maps are the Turinta ones. Though if you are handy with GPS, it is useful for finding your way in/out of towns and working out the reality of the way the minor roads interconnect when the map doesn't correspond to the ground.
Most of Portugal is nice for cycling. The western coastal strip either side of Porto isn't very interesting because its densely populated and heavily planted to eucalyptus monoculture - that covers all the way from Porto to the Spanish border and about 2/3 of the way to Lisbon. In general the area around Porto is difficult because its all motorways and big roads. Fortunately it is easy to put your bicycle on the suburban railway services from Porto, which go all the way from Aveiro to Braga, Guimaraes and Penafiel. The main long distance services and coach services can't be used by bike, though some regional and local railway services can be, it's rather hard to find out the details. The great plains of Baixo Alentejo and Ribatejo are probably less interesting for cycling. And expect very hilly cycling in the north and around the Serra da Estrela in the centre.
