I do not know if the subject is still valid but I will never lose opportunity to advise people to go to Japan. As for me by now it was the best country for cycling ever. I've cycled the length of it in 3 months in spring - awesome experience. And no, you do not need big budget for it, in my case it was like 15 EUR per day - assuming you sleep in your tent. The country is so safe, you can put your tent just anywhere in public places and nobody will bother you. And I am female travelling solo so I know what I mean:). Friendly people everywhere. Just English is a problem, what to do..
