hi!
I'm not sure wether to take my bike with me when I travel to India from March to July so i'm here basically to look for a little inspiration from other cyclists who have cycled around the same time of year. Can anybody give me an idea of how the weather is going to be and what might be a nice route to take? I'm an experienced cyclist but haven't done any cycling on my own and am a little concerned as fellow travellers have said as a lone female it may be a little too risky. Any suggestions would be very appreciated
Laura.

summer months are too hot o visit india the sun is in the northern hemespher heading for cancer.so you want to be somewere north of cancer, like europe.or south of the equater like south america or the phillipenes,or indonesiahope this gives you a general idea of what to aim for.if you find a male companion it wud b better.gud cycling

India is a big place! You'd probably be OK in the north, definately OK in the hills, perhaps a bit hot in the south. Check out the monsoon for where you're going though. It also depends how heat tolerant you are, but I usually acclimatise after a couple of weeks.
As for riding alone, I quite often do it and enjoy it very much - including India. However as a bloke it's a bit different - you need to talk to women who've ridden alone in India.

Cycling in India is crazy! I loved it and hated it at the same time but that is true about most of India. As a solo male cycling in India I would attract staring squads of upwards of 50 ppl in small villages, and I wasn't wearing and funky cycling gear. obviuosly you shouldn't wear spandex and I'd totally suggest cycling in pants and a long sleeve shirt, you'll get used to it. I'm sure a Shalwar kameez (or however you spell it) would be fine to cycle in, and you'll get treated alot better with respectful dress. In India I spent a few nights in my tent behind gas stations or on cots outside at truck stops- for a solo female I really wouldn't reccomend that! Plan it out as you go so you are in a hotel every night. I was hassled by drunks a few times but that happens everywhere. I don't want to deter you from cycling India as a solo female, but it'd be great to find a travel companion.
Singapore to India on bike

My wife and I cycled around southern india in late april, may, start of june. We started inland around the ajanta caves area which is extremely hot, well into the mid 40's. We decided to go back to the coast where it was more humid but not quite so hot. We cycled around goa and kerala mainly with some time in ooty, mysore etc. The heat on the coast was still a factor but was bearable, you will sweat your arse off.
Ive met women travelling alone in india without a problem, mind you they werent riding a bike around the country side. I cant really even imagine being theatened in India but again Im not a women.
My wife never really felt any sort of threats in India. She did make the mistake of wearing a bikini to swim in one day (outside of goa, and the tourist beaches of Kerala) which at the time there was no one for about 500m around. Within about 5 min she had about 30 Indian men swimming next to her. Although they were harmless that was bad judgement by her. Like above I dont recommend you camp solo.
Having said that I watched a doc of a english lady cycling solo through china, russia and europe as a first time trip, and I guess had the experience of her life.
Southern India is an easy place to cycle ( although hot and hilly to a certain extent) the people are great, the food is great, the roads are fine, plenty of accomm etc etc. I have heard Nth India is also good to cycle. I have travelled around there but not On a bike
Good luck

There are quite varied opinions about cycling in India on here... I am on the didn't-like-the-cycling-there side of things, but you will find others that love it. I think most would agree, however, that:
i) India has some of the worst drivers in the world, particularly with respect to LACK of respect for cyclists. You will likely come across fresh roadkill and I'm not talking about animals.
ii) It is a very safe country, and you will be well protected and taken care of, particularly if you wear loose, nonrevealing clothing
iii) As a solo female you will draw massive amounts of unwanted attention, simply by being you. This is whether you bike or not. I cannot stress enough how significant your clothing choices will be, in terms of the size of the crowds of young men that follow you everywhere, will be. I got hit on NUMEROUS times... and I'm a guy! (who wore shorts)
iv) Most of India will be very very hot at that time of year, the exception being the Western Ghats and the Himalaya
v) The monsoon hits in June to July, not ideal for cycling, I would think
vi) India is a large country, and it will take time to get from A to B. You can always hop on the train, easy with a bike
I'm not saying not to go with your bike, just be aware of what you are getting into.
