What's the best route? From Lima southwards along the coast to Ica, then Nasca and Abancay, and so further to Cusco? Or from Lima straight east into the mountains to La Oroya and then via the Sacred Valley to Cusco? Anyone done this last route? How is the road? How is traffic?
This is part of a bigger bike trip. We will be flying into Lima from Panama, and in Cusco, we will go on to La Paz in Bolivia, and then further south through Argentina and Chile.

I made it trough the mountains by La oroya....is hard and long but beautifull....trough the nasca and coast is terrible hwy...to heavy traffic....and sometimes to windy....to la paz try the area by the Lakke titicaca.....some parts are boring otherones are so beautifull....is mostly flat....if you want more detalils about my route let me know

j'ai fait un voyage à velo avec une amie de Lima à La oroya (et mon amie est allée jusqu'à Cusco).Arriver à Ticlio (4818m) est très difficile: ce sont 132km, la route est bonne et il n'y a pas beaucoup de circulation (contrairement à Lima-Nazca). De La Oroya à Cusco la route est longue, et quelques tronçons ne sont pas des routes mais des chemins. Lima-Nazca-Cusco (1165km):tout est goudronné.
les deux routes sont très belles,mais la route Huancayo-Cusco est un peu plus isolée et les paysages magnifiques.

important: si tu prends la direction de Ticlio, ne circules pas sur les premiers km de la "carretera central" dans le district de El Agustino et Santa Anita, car c'est dangereux (vols).
je suis parti en utilisant la avenue Abancay traverse le pont Huanuco pour entrer la rue Via Evitamiento (le centre de Lima) apres autopista Ramiro Priale " et après je suis arrivé à la carretera central (km10). à partir de là, c'est tranquille.
