I am going on a Darwin -> Perth cycling trip and am considering whether or not to include Kakadu NP in it. Is is worth taking a 200 km detour through Kakadu? Or am I going to see similar scene on the rest of 4300 km to Perth? I'm not going to take a hiking/boat tour, just cycling through.

the road out to kakadu is good mostly flat and there are some things worth seeing like ubirr rock and the aboriginal cave paintings at nourlangie you can then exit kakadu coming out at pine creek which is about 190 kms south of darwin then its onto katherine and out on the vic highway...the scenary is all changing,,,the escarpement country at the victoria river crossing is very pretty at late afternoon...there are some good camp sites along the way both for cars and just creeks with water and mozzies and crocs
just a note for you the shoulders of the roads in the territory are poor at times and often cur up from the wet season..also we have road trains that is a semi trailer 3 trucks long....
if you want any info drop me a line I am from the territory and have driven the road darwin to broome and perth to esperence ...
happy cycling

I used to work in kakadu area and drove up from perth. My 2 cents - most interesting areas are way off the Darwin -> Perth highway. But in kakadu area things are fairly close together, the tar seal is good and there are few trucks - I liked NW of kakadu (mary river) SE of kakadu for waterfall and swimming. Good campsites and escarpement edge walking in the NP.
