I tour ultralight and find one of my favourite aspects of touring is scrounging what I can find along the way. It adds to the sense of adventure waking up and setting out with little to no food or drinks onboard (and no tent), relying on what you come across... also including finding a bed for the night. Of course I pay for everything, never expecting and often refusing handouts, so I can't imagine I'm imposing on the locals, quite the opposite... they set the price, not me. I'm not going to get into the "which way is better" argument when it comes to camping v hotels, but certainly travelling the way I do forces me to leave the locals richer than before I passed by, and probably richer than when self-sufficient, self-cooking and camping bike tourists go by.
