Has anyone ever motorcycled toured in India?
How Challening were the roads and the congestion?

HI there, Manali to Leh is very popular, tho challenging, there's several places in both towns to get bikes for this,
cheers

Ben,
This is bicycle forum, you may have more luck on the India branch.
Having said that I have cycled toured a lot in India. Having your own transport is the way to go as it avoids all the worst hassles in the towns. Avoid the large cities which are huge and very clogged - hence polluted. The countryside is excellent - beware of the buses, they are the worst road users. Go slow as there are loads of unexpected hazards, the roads are better than most people expect, but even on dual carriageways you will find bullock carts going the wrong way down the fast lane! You MUST quickly learn the somewhat anarchic Indian rules of the road (or die).
Remember that most Indian m'bikes are crap, particularly the brakes (so I am told by ther m'cyclists I have met). Also they will regularly break down, but there are 'fix it' wallahs everywhere.
Go and enjoy, but I'd feel safer on a bicycle.
