This may or may not be seen as a daft question, but i am cycling from france to norway (going through, belgiu, netherlands, germany, denmark and sweden) Are the wearing of helmets compulsory? Obvioiusly for my own care i would be wearing the most of the time (certainally on or near major roads) however minor roads and paths, do I need to wear them.

Sweden, Denmark should be no problem in terms of law. Getting your head smashed agaist the pavement has the same effect everywhere.

You would actually stand out as a tourist when you wear a helmet in the Netherlands. But no one forbids you to wear it.
LOL #2! #3 is correct - when I biked the Netherlands for 2 weeks or so, the first day or two I wore my helmet. I was the only cyclist with one on. So I took it off, hooked it to my handbar and didn't use it for the rest of the country. You will find that the drivers in all these countries are bike friendly. And if you don't bike on the bike paths in the Netherlands, you'll get honked at!
There are three routes going south-north, the west, middle and eastern route

and as we like to have everything in order, there are nice little signs all the way
