i guess any gps will be useful in some situations eg finding your way back to your camp in the dark - but as u are going 1 way N to S most of the time it will just give u lots of compass and bike computer type info and may eat thru batteries. Most gps use AAA or AA NIMh batteries so u can plug them into a wall charger every few days. I now use a v simple garmin foretrex that works for me ok (strapped around a bit of pipe foam wrap on the handlebar), but there are bigger colour screen mapping units that dont cost much more (in usa) eg lowrance. I travelled up from Cape town and the best places i went to (eg for wildlife or just having a look at something interesting) were way off the main roads and while i didnt have a gps then it would have saved me all kinds of trouble as i got lost and misdirected often. If u have a camera that uses aa batteries or sd card storage u can get gps to run same and work as a jpg viewer. The software is way behind the hardware. Uploading waypoints to a web based map will be v hard at internet places as they have low bandwidth +dont like things being wired up to their crappy computers. Mitchelin paper maps were pretty good - (except for not much elevation info). Let us know how the trip goes

Same, tried a few Cateye computers. Was all could get at the time. None worked for long
Tried a VDO, Didn't like the way it worked so much, when it worked. Found same as iik, stopped working too often.
Now use Sigma 800. Does all I need, and has worked faultless many trips/years. First had wireless model, worked great till it got stolen. Now use wire job, not so expensive to loose. If I have to replace it, it will be another Sigma, of any model, but probably same 800.
